Question re: switching to cow's (or other) milk

Right now Luke nurses or has a bottle of breast milk in between meals, and then has water with meals. When he switches to cow's milk, should I keep this routine, giving him milk from his sippy about 1/2 hour before meals? Or should he be starting to have his milk along with his meals? What do you think you'll do?

  • I will probably give it during her meals, and then after because she pretty much refuses to drink anything while she eats.

  • When he wakes up, he gets 4oz of WCM. About 30 -45 minutes later, he'll start whining, so I know he's hungry, and he eats breakfast. He eats a little morning snack about an hour before nap #1, then right before nap #1, he gets 4oz of WCM. When he wakes up from nap #1, he's usually hungry about 30 minutes afterward, so he gets lunch with a cup of juice. An hour before nap #2 is an afternoon snack with a little water if he seems thirsty (he just drinks a few sips from my cup - we eat snack together). Right before nap #2, 4oz bottle of WCM. About an hour after nap #2, dinner, then right before bed, 4oz of WCM.

I have no idea if I'm doing this right, but he seems satisfied, and he's used to the bottle being a part of his routine for nap/night sleep. This Gerber thing I have says he should be getting 16-22 oz of WCM and usually, he'll take after 14 of the 16 I offer him.

    Here's how today went:

7:15am - up for the day, 4oz of WCM

    8:00am - breakfast (pancakes)

    9:30am - snack (yogurt)

    10:45am - 4oz of WCM, down for a nap

    11:55am (UGHHHH) - up

12:30pm - lunch (sausage and carrots)

    2pm - snack (peaches)

    3pm - 4oz of WCM, down for a nap

3:45pm - up (our naps were absolute shitt today, obviously)

5pm - dinner (toast and strawberries)

    6pm - snack (granola bar)

6:45pm - 4oz of WCM, down for bed

  • My daycare had us offer milk with meals to get her ready for the toddler room.  I just put it on her tray and she drinks it as she pleases, or I give it to her first to occupy her while I'm getting the rest of her food.  We've been doing this for months.  Our schedule:

    6:30 milk

    9 milk and breakfast

    12 milk and lunch

    3 milk and snack

    5:30ish dinner

    7 milk (before bed)

Our pedi recommended introducing a few ounces in a sippy around 10-12 months with DS1 and I'll try it with DS2 sometime soon.

I EBF so didn't bother with a bottle last time and won't this time, but if I did FF I think I'd still use a sippy for whole milk just to differentiate between milk as food and milk as a drink.
