Thumb sucking

My DD is 6 months and within the past few days has started sucking her thumb fairly often. I'm not too concerned with it at this point because it is helping her to self soothe. However, she is sucking it enough to create some redness and irritation on her thumb. My question is, anyone know of anything that is safe to put on it since her thumb will obviously end up back in her mouth?

I would use just a little dab of coconut oil and rub it in. That's my go to for a lot of things though
