We sleep trained our DS using the Ferber method when he was 6 months old. At that point, he was being rocked to sleep and was up anywhere from 6 to 10 times a night. We got into the habit of rocking and bouncing him to sleep because he had horrible reflux starting from when he was three weeks old, and it was the only way we could comfort him until he finally fell asleep.
He began sleeping 11 to 12 hours a night, until his first teeth started breaking through about five weeks ago. He's back to waking up about once a night, but our main concern is that it takes forever to get him to sleep now. He weighs about 23 lbs and I can't bounce him for 30 minutes to get him to sleep!
We attempted Ferber again, but it has been awful. Is definitely harder now that he's standing up...and he gets so upset that he throws up within the first 3 minutes, and didn't calm down at all within the first 20 mins so we called it quits.
i don't know what to do. Have any of you done Ferber at this point? Any ideas on other methods we can try?
Re: Teaching LO to fall asleep on his own...
OP - I think you are saying ferber is a fail because your child throws up? Have you thought about just laying them down and sitting with them with your hand on them in the crib?
Or doing it "old school" rocking / bouncing whatever - until almost asleep and then putting them down?
Have you tried putting your shirt or something else that smells like you? (Pillow case maybe?) in the crib with the baby?
THere are "no cry sleep" methods too..
Try the Sleep Lady Shuffle: https://www.parentsconnect.com/parenting-your-kids/kids-sleeping/good-night-sleep-lady-shuffle.html
My husband was all for the Ferber method, but I hated it. I found her book, ready it on my lunch break, and we put it to work that evening. It took time, I won't lie. But it was definitley easier on our daughter and on us. She had reflux too and would throw up if she cried too hard and long with the ferber method. When we did the sleep lady shuffle we had great results and minimal crying. I swear by this method and will use it with our second baby too.
Glad you posted this; I am wondering the same thing. We haven't tried any sleep training in the past but I am terrified to do it! At the same time, I am dying to be able to put my LO down and have her fall asleep on her own so I can free up some more time for myself/hubby. I really need to look at some books for no-cry sleep solutions.
