Parenting after a Loss

BLW food suggestions?

I've been trying to feed DD pur?es for a month with very little success.  Oatmeal with BM in the morning, the occasional sweet potato, pears, or squash later in the day.  She has no interest in them.  She won't open her mouth and I have to practically force the spoon in there. I hate doing that as I want eating to be a positive experience for her.  I am still BFing her on demand and I know that she's getting all that she needs right now.  I just want her to start getting interested in food.  Any suggestions on what foods she could safely feed herself without a spoon? I have given her puffs but she has difficulty getting them in her mouth because they are really small and get lost in her little fist.

  • We pretty much gave them what we were eating, within reason.  Chicken got shredded, harder veggies and fruits got chopped into small bites.  Avocado, banana, waffles, blueberries, and freeze dried corn were their favorites from the very beginning.  Scrambled eggs and quesadillas have also always been a big hit.

  • Just a gentle suggestion...I know it's exciting to see our kiddos experience new things and learn about their world, but maybe she's just not ready yet. If she's not interested, she's not interested. You'll know when she's ready because she'll start "asking" to eat while you're eating--either by pointing, following your food with her eyes, while her mouth hangs open, or shrieking until you share whatever's on your plate! If you're having to force a spoon into her mouth, it's probably just not time yet.

We are doing BLW with DD. The easiest things for her are in the shape of a finger, so she can grab then better and gnaw on them. She has the same problem with puffs you mentioned. So far, she has had banana and avocado (but didn't really like these 2 as they were hard to grip), sweet potato, yellow squash, cucumber, watermelon, apple, canteloupe, carrot, celery, pineapple, and last week gummed the heck out of a piece of pork chop!

were the sweet potato and squash pur?ed or I cooked in a different way? I have her pureed squash hoping she would feed herself with it by hand. It just made a mess. I know it's all part of exploration but still.

i agree with your points also.  I might take a short break on solids if she still doesn't go for whatever I try to give her at dinner.

Nope, not pureed. The sweet potato I peel and then cut into "fries" and then bake until it is soft. The squash I took out the seeds and then sliced and steamed. We have not pureed anything, just given it to her in a french fry shape so she can hold on to it.

thanks for the tips! And to the other ladies, thanks for posting. I know I need to be patient with DD. :)

Basically all of this. DD loved pasta, too. She still does. Honestly, she just loves food. She will eat ANYTHING.
