Babies: 9 - 12 Months

10 month old refusing food

I am a first time mom and my lo is now 10 months almost 11. Lo has nver had a problem with any baby food. I only buy organic and make my own. Just the past 3 weeks he is refusing to eat any food from a spoon. I have started giving him peices of chicken and some of the food I cook for dinner and he has started to spit everything out. Im not sure if its related to teething. He is having about 20 - 24 ounces of formula a day and our ped seems happy with the amount since he is gaining weight. Lo is in the 90th percentile at his 9 month well visit.

I miss the times when my lo would eat with out spitting out all his food. Does anyone have any suggestions i should try?

  • I'm not sure if you gave him pureed chicken in the past, but have you tried chunks of foods you've already fed him and he's enjoyed as purees? Maybe he just doesn't like chicken? When we went to finger foods we started with stuff she'd already had pureed because I knew she liked it and already had a taste for it. She still spits stuff out if the chunk is too big for her too.

  • Could it be the temperature of the food?  When my LO was cutting her bottom two teeth the temperature of her food was important.  She liked things at room temperature or slightly cool.  She would refuse to eat anything that was warm.  I think the warm food irritated her gums whereas the room temperature food felt good to chew on.

I was also say that my LO goes through phases.  Sometimes she is better about eating or other times she refuses almost everything.  I just keep offering and eventually she gets back on track. Hang in there!

  • I dont think its the temperature of the food. i always make sure its room temp or cooler. He never liked to eat the puree food or cereal warm. I just noticed hevhas a 5th tooth coming in so i think this might be part of the reason he is refusing food.
