So I work in the medical field. Ive made it past 36 weeks with no big exposure incidents. Last hour of my 12 hour shift today and I get a call. Yep...meningitis exposed. FML. Find out Monday if I go on profalactic meds. I googled meningitis in pregnancy and other than possibly getting sick it shouldnt affect little girl in there. Still makes me nervous though....

    Yeah, I float to infectious disease at my hospital weekly, so needless to say I've been extremely paranoid. 

    I hope everything is okay with you and your little one!

    I had an scare of a flu exposure recently at work. I had been working with a patient for 4 days straight then had a day off and when I came back she was on droplet precautions and I asked why. Turns out they suspected flu but thank goodness her labs came back negative. I did get my flu shot this year but that doesn't cover all strains! I hope that everything will be okay for you and LO.

    Thanks ladies. Its spread through coughing/droplet and the patient while very sick was not coughing and I was only in the room for 3 or 4 minutes so I'm pretty confident it wont amount to anything. Keeping my fingers crossed....

    Ughhh.... I'm sorry. I had that happen last week too! I came in to work and a patient who I had the night before had a "no pregnant caregivers" sign up. Active shingles. FML. As far as meningitis goes, my mom, who is also a nurse, had meningitis when she was pregnant with me... We're okay! Hope everything is okay for you and LO too! Pregnant in the medical field can be scary!

    When I was doing my clinicals a few months ago my OB said I could do everything except iso rooms. My instructor was totally cool with this. The CNA's I worked with were pissed, though. They kept asking me over and over why I couldn't do the iso rooms even though I explained it several times. C Diff, flu, meningitis, oh my!

    Im sorry thats scary. Im currently panicking because DD got the chicken pox vaccine about two weeks ago and this weekend a few odd spots popped up. I am findng tons of conflicting information as to whether or not this is contagious. I did have it as a child but Im still calling her doc and my mw tomorrow.


    I had to ask my ob about this due to another pt exposure. Basically if you had chicken pox as a child you are ok to be around chicken pox and shingles. Your body has antibodies that protect both you and baby. If you have never had it or are unsure, then you would be at risk. I believe they can do a blood test to check.

    Thanks! This makes me feel better. And yes, the medical field is terrifying while pregnant, especially working in ER when you aren't sure what's coming in the door..lol.
