August 2012 Moms

Car seat insight?

To preface: I plan to keep Emery RF for as long as possible.

When J and A were little the only car seat recomendations I ever heard was to turn FF at a year.  I never questioned it, ever, and I turned them FF shortly after their first birthdays.

Was I just really dense and uninformed/ignorant, or has car seat safety and knowledge really changed this much over the last 7 years?

Re: Car seat insight?

  • My sister has a 2, 6 and 7 year old. The only one who went past a year is the two year old.

ETA: I Assume that's because the rules changed between the second and third

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Everyone I mention this to think I am crazy. Most moms have kids that are elementary age, and can't believe this is the new recommendation. I completely plan on keeping her RF until at least 2, but I know I will have to explain why to most people who see her in her seat.

  • It really has changed that much. My sistsister's kids are 22, 10, 6, and two 2yr olds. She said everything aspect of parenting is always changing.

We are getting a 12 passenger van. Leah is going to be six August 22. She wants to go rear facing yet again. We have a foonf and at that time if she still wants to rear face, I am going to
Turn her back around. She rear faced until February, but we turned her for the convenience. It was her choice to rear face that long. She says it is easier to sleep. She is my car seat sleeper. More than an hour in the car and she is usually out.
  • No not dense. The rules changed in April of 2011. DD1 turned at 14 months and I was the odd ball in my group who waited that long. I knew several moms who turned at 10 months.

  • It's really changed that much. You weren't dense.

I agree with PP though. I'm definitely going to have to explain, probably constantly, why G isn't FF after a year.

It is true about explaining to people. I have a hard to time explaining it to myself. I know research advances and things change. I fully intend on following new guidelines. But my mind is all "wow I did the wrong thing with DD1 and shes fine" and that was only a few years ago.
People are funny about things. Why do others care that babies aren't turned FF.

  • My 2 1/2 year old is still rear facing and will be until he is 44in or 45lbs which is the max for our car seat to be rear facing, alot of people think I'm crazy or question me but I don't really care.  I don't know if the recommendation has even changed here yet.

Leah still is not this size at nearly six. I have a foonf though and she will go into it.
  • My niece is almost 2 and she was turned at one year...I don't know if that was due to new research not being released yet, or if she did it just because. So I don't think you were dense or ignorant, things change so quickly, it's hard to keep up!

  • They FF at 6 months here. We had to spend extra money on ordering the right seat. I have gotten a lot of strange looks and heard whispers about me not wanting my baby to grow up from strangers.

  • Two of my good friends just turned their little boys this summer.  Said boys are 22 months and 15 months.  These are moms who are very involved, engaged parents and they still don't seem informed about the latest recommendations.

It seems that the message still hasn't gotten to the masses, just to nerds who spend a lot of time online. (This girl!) I am assuming that this was even truer a few years ago: things take a long time to become common knowledge.
