DS will be 13 months old this week. Up until a couple weeks ago (before we went on vacation which screwed him all up) he'd wake up every morning at 6am, go down for a nap around 9/9:30am for a couple hours, go down for an afternoon nap around 2/3pm for an hour or so, and go to bed at 8pm.
Then we went on vacation, he hasn't been able to put himself to sleep at night anymore, we need to redo sleep training, etc. etc. etc. However my question is about his naps. His morning nap has always been his "good" nap--easy to go down, and unless he poops he sleeps for a good hour and a half to two hours. His afternoon nap is getting harder and harder to get him to go down and he will only sleep for 40 minutes, maybe an hour....some days if we're lucky an hour and a half but that's rare. Since being on vacation he's been going to bed later and sleeping in a bit later too, so his morning nap isn't ending until like noon. By the time he goes down for his second nap we are having to wake him up for dinner. What would you do in this situation--would you try to hold off on him taking his morning nap til later and putting him to bed earlier (so just one nap a day?) or would you wake him up from his morning nap after an hour or so, in the hopes that his afternoon nap would be longer?
I feel like it's too soon for him to go down to just one nap a day, and it's SO easy putting him down for it 3 hours after he's been up that I almost don't want to mess with it. But at the same time I really don't want to have to wake him up if that's good sleep he's getting...however that second nap is getting to really be a nightmare some days. Today we spent an hour getting him to go down--and he slept for 40 minutes. As you can tell I'm torn on what to do.
Help! Sorry this is so long!
Re: One Year Old Naps - WWYD?
What is your schedule like with LO, if you don't mind me asking, since you switched?
DX: High FSH/DOR
It took 44 cycles, just over 3 years, 6 failed IUI's in MI, and 1 round of IVF at CCRM to get our BFP!
Beta #1 (9dp5dt) = 206, Beta #2 (11dp5dt) = 438
1st u/s @ 6w5d = 11/11/11 = ONE little bean! HB 120bpm!

My LO went to 1 nap on his own at 1 year. I cant really remember the process, but it involved really busy mornings to get him into his afternoon nap.
It was a perfect 7am, 12 pm, 9 pm thing that has gone to crap since he has been walking and figures he has no time for such silliness. Honestly, its morphed into 8 am, 2pm, 10 pm schedule now so yay for me.
Can you try holding him out til 12? That was the magical nap hour for a long time with us and he would sleep til 2 or 3.
I agree with the other posters. My kids both dropped their second nap shortly before they turned one. I would push back the morning nap to around noon if possible and then move bedtime up if needed. I think I ended up moving up both their bedtimes an hour after they dropped to one nap.
Transitions with naps/bedtimes have always been really smooth at out house, but I never forced anything. I watched for cues and let their bodies pretty much dictate when nap and bedtime would be.
We're currently in almost the same situation, and I think DS is transitioning to one nap. We've been in limbo for a few weeks, so I've been pushing his morning nap a little bit later every day. Yesterday he woke up around 7:00, napped from 11:00 to 1:45, and went to bed around 7:00. He probably could have gone to bed around 6:00, but I felt like it would turn into a nap if I put him down then.
On days when his nap is short, I do still lay him down for a nap in the afternoon around 4:00. He doesn't tend to fight it, but if he did I would drop that nap and bump bedtime just a tad.
