Kick Counts With Twins

Probably a silly question, but doctor wants me doing kick counts and I'm not sure I'm doing it right. Babies are basically on top of each other so it can be difficult to tell which one is moving so I try to do it when I just feel movement on one side. The thing is, when they're really active, it takes me maybe three minutes to feel 10 distinct movements. Am I supposed to count all of these, or just a specific hard kick? I'm not sure if they are just really active or if I'm counting things I shouldn't.

Maybe it is silly to worry about since I do feel a lot of movement from both?

Re: Kick Counts With Twins

  • I counted all movement during kick counts. It is hard to tell sometimes which movement came from which twin so like you I focused on a particular side when counting. For me anything I felt below my belly button was A and anything above my belly button was B. B was the hardest to count because his hands and feet were facing downward towards A's head.

Again, I counted all movement in the kick counts and maybe you could ask for clarification at your next OB appointment.

  • I could never tell which baby I was feeling until the very end because I had two anterior placentas and one baby was behind the other one. However, my OB didn't have me doing kick counts like you would with a singleton. I was just supposed to feel three "patterns of movement" a day. A lot of MoMs can distinctly tell which baby is which though.

    I think any movement counts.

  • I have one on each side so I can usually tell, but I was never told to do kick counts.  My babies move constantly so on the few occasions I haven't felt movement in a few hours I will lay down and do counts.

My only trip to L&D this pregnancy was when I barely felt B move for quite a while.  Of course, she went crazy the second they put the monitor on.
