Running question

Hi Ladies,

I've been keeping as normal a running routine as possible. I feel great after my runs but have a question about cramps. I do stay hydrated as an FYI and I am running way under my normal pace. . My question is that sometimes I will have light cramping on my left or right side, HOWEVER, prior to being pregnant I would have the same light cramping. The cramps last for about 30 seconds then subside. I only get one or two during a 20-60 minute jog. I just am not sure how to decipher them because like I mentioned I had these same feelings my entire experience as a runner. What are your thoughts?

I am replying because I hope to hear other people's thoughts too. :) I am a runner normally, but have been a walk/jogger since being pregnant. I get out of breath too easy so I just walk and jog for several hundred feet at a time and keep myself comfortable.

I liken the cramps I feel to a side-ache, just like I would get sometimes when running before. Although now, it seems like the sideache stretches out across my belly. I figure since the belly is so stretched out, so is the side ache??

Anyway, I just take it easy and my stomach muscles do seem to always be stretched, taught, and the seem to hurt sometimes "on the outside" if that makes sense? It's never "inside" or period like cramping feeling though...Anyway, I am curious to how the stomach muscles of other pregnant joggers feel.

    :)

  • I'd check with your doctor, but if its a pain you had previously and it doesn't feel like cramping around your uterus, etc. I wouldn't worry about it.  I am still running (38w5d) and did/do have some muscle/ligament pain on some days-you'll be able to tell the difference between that and if something is really wrong.  Use your common sense, trust your instincts, and check with your doctor if in doubt :)
  • I am mobile and can't see your siggy, so I don't know if you're pg or TTC. I'm TTC number one and under the care of an RE. The meds have my ovaries so full and the bloating is miserable. Running makes everything worse right now, so I'm scaling back. My rule of thumb is to always listen to my body and err on the side of caution. It's not worth it to go the extra mile if it's gonna cost you a couple of weeks in recovery. When I get pg, I will be doubly cautious. GL to you!

  • I agree with PP that if it is the same pain you have always experienced than you should just ask your OB about it at your next appointment.

I specifically asked my OB about running at my pre-conception appointment since I am currently training for my 2nd marathon, and if we are lucky TTC I could run the marathon while in my first trimester.  She said as long as I stay super hydrated I am good to go.  (I am a slow runner now so I wasn't worried about having to slow was down, lol.)
