Advice- part time jobs for moms?

I've been a SAHM for 5 years (I actually lost my job while on maternity leave). I'm really looking forward to re entering the workforce when my girls are in school full time (not til 1st grade). My experience is with tv/entertainment which wont really be a possibility (I'd have to commute to the city). Any advice where to start from scratch? I have administrative experience. I'm open to retail. The only area that doesnt interest me is sales/commission-based jobs. Thanks for any advice!

  • Try local tv/radio stations first then you can stay close and in your field. As for moving laterally, need more info. What did you do in tv/entertainment? Producer, sound board, camera... Need to know your skill set to help you brainstorm other ideas.

  • Are you only interested in parttime? That will obviously limit your options quite a bit. You would probably have to just apply to admin and retail. Temp agencies can be helpful if you want to build up some more recent admin experience and one of those assignments could always go long term or permanent.

If you're just looking to boost the family income a little, I'd look into retail merchandising. You'd work for a marketing company, not a specific store. They send people into stores to put sticky coupons on things, make sure XYZ new product is out on display, check outdates, etc. I believe they typically pay by the assignment and as long as deadlines are met, you could work pretty much whatever time of day you want. (i.e. only during school hours).
  • My DH works at a call center part time. Many call centers are really flexible with what hours and what days you work. He says a lot of his coworkers are moms and college students. I think the key is to find a call center that's not sales focused.
