15 Weeks Pregnant

15 weeks and dealing with headaches

Hey fellow 15 weekers! I'm suffering from headaches that are lasting up to 3 days at a time. My doc didn't really give me any more information that I didn't already know (are you eating enough? Drinking enough water? etc.) and I don't normally suffer from migraines either. I've seen a chiro and that did help for about a week to a week and a half, but they always return. Is anyone else going through this? How did you find relief?

Re: 15 weeks and dealing with headaches

  • My whole pregnancy I've had awful headaches on and off. For me I've noticed that the heat usually makes all my pregnancy woes worse, so when I get a headache it usually helps me to lay down in a cool, dark room. I take a small nap and I feel a lot better when I wake up.

  • I've been having headaches also. My doctor told me that Tylenol is safe to take. At first I didn't want to take anything, but I found that if I didn't, my headaches would last about 3 days. Now I take 1 Tylenol (not 2) as soon as I start feeling one come on, and it usually goes away.

I never had migraines or bad headaches before getting pregnant.  I've had several headaches since, especially now that morning sickness is over.

Tylenol has definitely helped (usually 1-2) and now that I'm in the second trimester, I've introduced a little caffeine back into my diet.  And by a little, I mean a regular diet coke here and there.  Sometimes that little bit of caffeine will really help with the headache.

    Hope that helps!

  • Currently 15.5 weeks:

For a large part of my first trimester I was suffering consistent headaches everyday. My body tends to take anything wrong with me out in headaches prepregnancy, but my thinking was it was due to the changing hormones. They were not so severe as migraines or anything, but definitely not just a light headache either. My doctor told me I could take Tylenol. (Side note: I told her I bought the little children's Tylenol so I could take a smaller dose, but she told me if you are going to expose baby to the acetaminophen, take what's going to make your headache go away. Which for me means the Extra Strengths.) I took the Tylenol when I couldn't get myself to focus enough on other things besides the headache as consistently taking Tylenol is not on my normal to-do list even prepregnancy, but especially not with baby.

Oh, and I know for week 4 at least my headaches were due to caffeine withdrawal as that is when I knew I was pregnant and I stopped doing any caffeine altogether, no coffee, no soda, maybe chocolate though... I was the kind of person who drank that stuff ALL DAY LONG.

  • My doctor also suggested having salt. She said that sometimes headaches are caused by low blood pressure and having some salt can bring it up
  • I am also 15 weeks. I was regularly having headaches on and off before I found out I was pregnant, I kept having them throughout my first trimester. Now that I am in my second trimester I still get them. My dr prescribed me some medicine that I had tried before that did not work but now is working occasionally. The heat causes my headaches to get worse or start and I also get them when I wake up in the morning and keep the headache throughout some of the day. Headaches can be very annoying so just try to take it easy and stay out of excessive heat. Hopefully you can find something that will help you cope with your headaches.
  • I have had the same hedache (I swear!) for two and a half weeks. I went to my OB, and he gave me a prescription for Tylenol with codiene, but even it didn't work. He is also sending me to a neurologist to get checked. I'm afraid I may be in for a long headachy pregnancy, though. This is my fourth baby, and I have never had this problem before. It is a real bummer. Hope you feel better soon!
  • i am 15 weeks and have been suffering horrible headaches since about week 8. Tylenol doesn't seem to help. I drink a cup of tea every morning just to get some caffeine in. That seems to help a bit. But once I have the headache it usually lasts about 2-3 days. I have missed work twice due to this. I have had no morning sickness at all but have gotten sick due to these headaches twice. I thought it might have been from the prenatal vitamins and tried a few days without them and still suffered the headaches. The doctor didn't seem too concerned when i brought it to her attention so I guess we all just have to deal:( I try to stay hydrated and try to always have a snack around so that way i don't get a headache from not eating. Happy pregnancy all ;)
  • I'm so glad to hear that I'm not alone!  I have friends who tell me that their pregnances were wonderful and they always felt great.  Well that's not the case for me! I've always suffered from headaches.  I get migraines and I've suffered from sinus problems since I was a kid and it's gotten worse with pregnancy. Some days are so bad I can barely function. They gave me amoxicillin which didn't help at all.  Then I got ceftin which helped some, but after I finished the Rx I started get sinus pain again almost immediately.  I take Extra Strength Tylenol whenever I have pain which helps take the edge off, but doesn't get rid of the pain.  Once I finished my first trimester the doctor said I could take Sudafed.  It helps a little, but I'm going to see a specialist this week. I've tried every home remedy possible and I don't know what else to do.
  • I am suffering from the headaches too and it is no fun :( I am 14w5d and have them quite often. I also think, as another poster said, that the heat has a lot to do with the headaches. Something that has helped me is to lie down and put an icepack or cool towel on my forehead. Tylenol is completely safe to take, but I am trying to avoid taking medications so only take it when I need it. I hope you find some relief!
  • I've suffered from migraines for over ten years and of course I continue to get headaches and migraines while pregnant. I taken tension headache medicine because it has Tylenol and 65 mg of caffeine. The caffeine kick helps me with my headaches. I've been with a neurologist for years. I take propanolol daily (blood pressure medicine) to prevent my migraines. Since I was having them more frequently I called my neurologist- he said there wasn't much he could do to help, but I could take riboflavin 250 mg daily or magnesium 600 mg daily as a preventative and firicet was a better pain medicine to take if it lasted for days and nothing worked. I was in the ER around 10 wks and had to get IV pain meds and fluids. Hang in there!! I feel your pain!
  • I always used to get migraines but it had gone away... now their back with a vengence and their killing me i'll go to sleep with a nasty head ache and wake up with on and i dont wanna take any meds just cause it makes me nervous so all i do is lay in a dark room with a cold rag over my head turn on my fan and sleep Tongue Tied sucks and every one just keeps saying "it'll be worth it in the end" i know but geez can i get a break LOL

  • My doctor told me to drink disolvable magnesium and that should help with the headaches. I just bought some and I'm hoping that will bring some relief naturally!
  • The cool cloth over my eyes has been helping, if you're somewhere you can do that.

  • I'm going through the exact same thing! I just hit the 15 week mark and have been suffering from headaches for the last week or so!

I've been taking Tylenol (which I don't find very helpful) and using an icepack on my neck and head. The icepack gives me more relief that the medicine.

    Hope this helps!

  • I'm 15 weeks as well and I get them all the time. Plus I have horrible allergies. It's like come on. I'm already tired all the time anyway and the allergies just make the headaches worse.
  • I also have had headaches. I've read and been told that the headaches are hormone induced. I've taken tylenol, naps and tried a cold compress. They all seem to help but the headaches do come back.
  • So sorry about your headaches!  I suffered, unfortunately, from migraines before my pregnancy.  I'm currently 15 weeks and they came on strong.  After the 7th day, I couldn't take it anymore, and Tylenol was doing zero to help.  Worried that I was consuming too much Tylenol, I went in to check in on the baby...and they were able to prescribe a couple of pills that are safe to take with baby.  One is a combo of things....including caffeine.  The other is a bit stronger, but both you can take up to 3 or 4 times a day.  If they are lasting a few days and you know that you are doing everything else right, I would inquire about what other medications might be available.  I know its always scary to introduce drugs to a growing baby, but it's worth it in the end to be a little more comfortable.  Good Luck!!
  • i have been having regular headaches lasting days at a time since week 12. I asked my dr and he suggested drinking a glass of juice or eating an apple as my blood sugar could have dipped a bit and that is my bodies way of telling me i need a little pick me up. I was also told to drink lots and lots and lots of water. When i feel a headache coming on i grab  an apple or juice and that usually helps dull it enough so i can function. Good Luck!

    sSame here !!
  • I have also been dealing with pretty bad headaches over the past couple of weeks. The only thing that we can really do is take Tylenol, drink plenty of water, like way more than you think you could ever drink, and try to tough it out. I feel ya sweetie, it's not fun, but it's worth it! :)

  • I spoke to my dr about a week ago bc mine were getting so bad and I wanted to know what other options I had and there were not many.  Try taking an extra strength tylenol while drinking a cup of coffee, then drink a glass of water.. this has helped me quite a bit.  My doctor said that if that were to stop working, I could try a prescription to Reglan?  or I could come in for an IV (if it was so bad that nothing helped).

  • I had these with my first pregnancy and now again with this one.  My problem seems to be compounded by hormones and high blood pressure.  If Tylenol does not abate the pain, then I have been prescribed Norco, which is similar to Tylenol w/ Codeine.  What I really find to help the most though is rest, rest, rest, and more resting.  But since you found relief with the chiro, yours may be more stress/tension related.  Have you tried a massage?  That might help also (and who doesn't like a good excuse for a nice, relaxing massage?)!

  • Unfortunately I had them a lot during 2nd tri with DD.  This time around they started in 1st tri and are still on.

I take tylenol for them...always freak out a little wondering if it's too much but DD turned out just fine.

I hope everyone's headaches subside sooner than later.  They make me feel so grouchy!

  • I know how you feel. Tylenol will help alot. Thats the only thing you can take anyways.
  • I am also 15 weeks pregnant and I would like to say CONGRATS to all Mom's and new Mom's !!! I have had the worst headaches since I have became pregnant and I take Tylenol and it seems not to work at all and with these headache's I'm not the only one to suffer from them my family also does cause it ruins my whole day and then puts me in the worst mood and then WE all suffer . I wake up with the headache's and go to bed with the headache's and NOTHING works NOT even peace and quite time . I have an appointment coming up but from reading the comments there is really nothing to do for headache's when it comes to pregnant women and pretty much all pregnant women and myself do not like to take meds that could hurt the baby . I wish everyone Good health and Good luck with ALL

  • I've noticed that, in addition to allowing a cup of tea and plenty of drinks and food throughout the day, that quiet time alone helps (I work in an elementary school). I'll have to try the salty suggestion!
  • I found that mine was my prenatle vitamins. I changed the brand that I was taking and that helped.

  • I'm also having awful headaches, almost daily. I have been taking 1 tylenol and using a heating pad on the back of my neck. There are some neck stretches that work as well for me. I do them at the first twinge of a headache. This all seems to help, as I think mine are from muscle tension in my neck and back. Hope this helps!
  •  I have found out that really salty foods give me headaches so I ve stopped with those. I also found that alot of light will cause headaches too. I find it comforting to sit in a dark warm room cold tempuratures really trigger some really bad headaches for me.  I have also went to bed with a heating pad on the side of my head and found some relief too. Make sure it's not too hot and make sure you limit your time to about 5  min at a time.

  • i usually get my headaches in the moring someties they go away sometimes they dont.tylenol only helps dull them but doesnt really take them away/

they usually go away on there own but not rite away

  • Salt was what I needed for my headaches! It was either salt or a nap and it worked for me :
  • M dear A passing through the same constant head.. But I seem better when I take a glass of water..I think U should try that too.
  • I had headaches from week 12 - week 14. They would last for 2-3 days at a time. My dr. told me to start me to start a magnesium supplement each day, and take an additional magnesium pill when I could feel the headache starting. She also told me to take 2 extra strength tylenol with a big glass of water and drink half a cup of coffee (caffeine). Her advice helped me. Apparently, it's from the increased blood flow in the body that then compresses your brain. Good luck!
  • Like others said dark room, cool compress, a cup of caffeinated tea, but what also helps me holistically is lavender oil or peppermint oil rubbed on your temples and pressure points, I do use Tylenol as a last result.

I take Tylenol 500mg, even though it rarely helps. My doctor advised me to take Magnesium 250mg daily too. This hasn't helped at all either. I'm hoping they try something else when I go back in 3 weeks, I'm tired of having a constant headache.
  • I also suffer from headache like that, what worked for me was putting a cold wet cloth on my forehead and over my eyes. It calms me down and the headache melts away.
  • My headaches started at 11 weeks. My doctor said they are hormone related and should subside by week 16-20. He suggested Tylenol, rest, and cool compresses. Hard to do at work! Hoping they get better sooner than later.
