TMI stitches

This morning in the shower I noticed about an inch long thread of my stitches had come out, but they are still attached just hanging there. I haven't bled in 2 days and started bleeding heavier bright red this afternoon. It's almost impossible to tell if I am bleeding from my tear as it was on the inside. I'll call my OB Monday... But was wondering if anyone had any experience with stitches coming out...should I be concerned even if I have no sign of infection? My tear was small first degree...I guess I'm just scared it won't heal properly now. I am 10 days postpartum if that is relevant.

Re: TMI stitches

  • Mine came out on their own with DD at about 10 days pp. I think that's supposed to happen, right? I know I never had them removed and had plenty of stitches with a 3rd degree tear.

Ok thanks for the reassurance. Last time they just dissolved and I didn't notice them so this time it freaked me out.

Yeah, I think a lot of mine dissolved, but I do recall finding bits and pieces I the thread too. As for the bleeding, I'd just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get heavy or more painful in the area of the tear

I think typically they are supposed to dissolve on their own, but a small part of mine came out last time around.  I asked my doc and she wasn't concerned.

Thanks! The bleeding has pretty much slowed down.

  • I had a string dangling for a day or two. It was really irritating, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. And the bleeding can come and go I thought it had finally stopped then had another day of bright red blood at 5 weeks pp.

The stitches dissolve on their own and just watch your bleeding. If you had a day of doing more than usual, you may have heavier bleeding so take it easy and the bleeding should improve.
