Toddlers: 24 Months+

WCM to 2%

It seems many moms on here switched from whole milk to 2% around age 2. Is there a reason why? Is it more so they dont take in too many extra calories? I was just curious of the rationale. TIA

  • Most pedis recommend the switch yes, due to the fat calories.  But it's not a given that every child should switch.  My son is a total peanut and I've chosen to leave him on whole milk with no end in sight and his pedi supports it 100%.

  • They don't need as much fat for their brains or growth. If your kid drinks one cup of milk a day, staying with whole is probably fine. If your kid tries to live off milk (mine does, some days) then they probably don't need that much fat.

    ETA: I switched to 1% because that's what I drink and I saw no reason to purchase two kinds.

  • My Pedi said reduced fat milks have the same amount of nutrients as WCM. So less fat.

  • We also switched because DH was drinking too much of the whole milk himself and gaining weight and two different gallons at a time took up too much room in the fridge.

  • They don't need the extra fats from WCM after the second year.  We switched to 1% at age 2.

  • We just switched DS to skim milk at 2 because that's what we drink in our house.  He sees a nutritionist, and she recommended the switch because DS is at the top of the weight and BMI charts and she thinks we need to limit his saturated fats.  (She also recommended limiting portions - that's not happening).

  • We also do raw milk. I have no problem with a higher fat diet though. I think it is sugar and processed carbs that are the real problem.

  • Our pedi said we could switch to 2% or keep him on whole; he was right at 50% for weight so she didn't have a strong opinion either way.

    We switched to 2% but I'm considering switching back.  To me he seems so skinny (not scrawny, just very lean and muscular, not an ounce of fat on him) - I definitely don't think it'd be too much fat for him.

  • Another raw milk family here. But during the weeks I can't get it, ds still drinks organic whole milk. I grew up drinking whole milk and was/am pretty thin.

    Is there more to this story than what you briefly shared? Why does your 2 year old go to a nutritionist and why are you supposed to limit portions? As long as you aren't feeding the kid bacon, lucky charms, etc. in excess who cares?

    He sees a speech pathologist because he has some swallowing issues (oropharyngeal dysphagia).  For some reason, they always include a nutritionist at his appointments, even though I don't think it's needed.

    DS is on the top of the charts for BMI.  He's about 75th percentile for height but 95% for weight, so the nutritionist is a bit concerned about his weight.  She said if his BMI doesn't start to decrease, she wants to limit his portions.  I'm NOT on board with that, as I think DS is a healthy weight, and I don't think he eats too much.  He's just always been a big kid.  I'm not against him drinking skim milk, though... he gets plenty of fat in his diet from other sources.
