Placental abruption mamas?

Hi ladies,

I think I did an intro on this board after I had my LO, Graham, last July, but I've been more active on my BMB than on here. Long story short, he was born at 36 weeks at 4 lbs 1 oz via emergency c-section. I was induced due to pre-e and IUGR, and during the induction I experienced a placental abruption, and they were able to get him out in four minutes.

Graham will be one on Friday, and DH and I have recently started talking about a timeline to TTC number 2. I am pretty much petrified about having additional complications with a future baby, but especially the abruption. I know I've read that the pre-e is more common with first pregnancies, but that women who've had an abruption have a 10% chance of having it happen again.

I guess I'm just looking to see if anyone has a success story for pregnancy after having a previous abruption? Or just some words of encouragement? Thanks so much!

  • I had a 30 weeker last time due to a placental abruption. They are pretty sure it happened at implantation and was not due to anything I did. This pregnancy, I didn't have another abruption and am 39w, 3d today! Definitely talk to your doctor about your chances!

Thank you so much for your responses! Another question for you- how much are you being monitored now in your current pregnancies? I know my ob had mentioned that he would be monitoring me a lot more closely the next time around. Have you been having extra ultrasounds, appts, etc.?

Good luck to you both! It's really reassuring to hear that things are going well for y'all.

I was monitored a lot more closely this time. I had cervical checks starting at 16 weeks (every 4 weeks, which went to every 2 weeks once I hit 24 weeks) to make sure there was no shortening, and those continued until the 32 week mark. They also did two FFN tests at 30 and 32 weeks to make sure I was not leaking fluid (I wasn't, just a precaution), and I had weekly P17 shots to prevent pre-term labor. The extra appointments were exhausting after a while, but were extremely reassuring.

  • I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer but wanted to share my experience for perspective. Everyone is different but I lost a baby at 21w due to a placental abruption. They chalked the abruption up to bad luck and bad implantation. I got pregnant again but lost that baby at 16w due to an unknown cause. After that loss they did an HSG to look for abnormalities in my ute. They found a small amount of scar tissue so they did a hysteroscopy. I got pg a few months following that. I was monitored closely and had a cerclage placed at 12w as a preventative measure. At 18w I was placed on bed rest because of a shortened cervix. At 19w I was put on hospital bed rest because my cervix was basically gone. At 23w6d I had a placental abruption and delivered my daughter via emergency c-section.

This is all enough to keep me from wanting to have another child.

i had no idea our stories were so similar, crazy! I too have had 3 pregnancies (well, that made it out of the first tri anyways) & abrupted all 3 times. DS1 was 32 wks, DS2 was 23 & did not make it & DD was 24 wks & is still in the NICU. We will not be having more kids based on the advice of our MFM & because we just couldn't face this again.

I would schedule a consult with your MFM to outline the risks way before you think of ttc.

  • Hi.

I am not really very active on the bump. I had my DD at 30 w 5 days due to an unexplained placental abruption. I was having a fantastically healthy pregnancy until that night. It was such a shock. DD was born at just less than 3 lbs (we have very small babies in our family and then we turn into amazons as adults). I was too scared to have another and we got pregnant this Jan (am 28 weeks pregnant today w DD2). My OB did a haematology panel the instant I told him I was pregnant again and we found the MTHFR mutation and Prothrombin II mutation and some other issues. The OB who delivered my DD1 (we lived in Dubai then) went through her surgical notes and told me they found a HUGE clot at the abruption site. So now I am on baby aspirin and daily heparin injections and both my OB's are convinced I will make it to term and the thrombophilia is the reason for my abruption and sudden hypertension (bp was 140/110 when I was in the OR). Although of they do say nothing is certain.

Am I afraid? So so so afraid, but I just want to make it to 37 weeks and am trying to be positive and happy. I go in for my steroid shot on Monday and plan on having another one just before delivery. I also have had two color Doppler scans to ensure placental function and blood flow. I have another scheduled for Monday and plan to push for another after 32 weeks.

Have you checked for thrombophilia? ANA to indicate a possible sub clinical autoimmune condition? I always say forewarned is forearmed. Ask these questions and do these tests for peace of mind before you TTC.

    Good Luck.

  • Hi, I have a six yr old who was born at 28 wks due to sudden pre eclampsia. When he was about 2 I lost a baby at 23 wks due to abruption. I had blood work done and found out I have a clotting disorder (prothrombin gene mutation). My next pregnancy I was on daily blood thinner injections and went full term with no complications. I am now almost 35 wks along with another baby and on the blood thinners again. I would definitely have some blood work done to see if you have any underlying conditions. Good luck!
