would you believe this?

We have been having escalating problem with SS2. He is 17 y/o. He used to get fairly good grades and rhw past year was awful. He failed two classes and is in summer school and currently failing one of those.

He has very intense anger issues. He was seeing a therapist and psychologist. He stopped taking his medications in the spring. His therapist seems to have taken the summer off.

I have been trying to talk to DH that I think SS2 is doing drugs. He has erratic behavior mixed with huge swings of emotions. DH refuses to believe that this is an issue.

I realized today that he has spent 900 in the past three weeks. He only makes 100 a week at his part time job. DH and I asked about it. He said he goes to Dunkins every morning and McD after school and then gives his brother the remaining money for gas.

His story is consistent with the daily ATM withdrawals. his card only allows 50 per day.

What are your thoughts on this? I am taking him in for a psych evaluation on Tuesday and plan to request a drug test as well.

  • If his story is consistent with the ATM withdrawals, how do you figure he spent 900? Could he have saved the money up? Got the money from BM? Maybe stealing?

  • I would def follow through with the evaluation and drug screen but also wanted to put out there that some meds have lasting effects even when they stop taking them. I had the same fear about my oldest SS. It was bc he had stopped taking his meds properly though and is now on a different med.

Oldest SS also had the very bad mood swings. He would be the sweetest kid one minute and then explode in a moment.

Ditto this. And you have no legal right to ask for a drug test, your DH really needs to be there.

I agree that DH would need to be involved but in my situation, even though I am not a legal custodian, I can request a drug test through the counselors or through school. I know every situation is different though.

  • What has he spent 900 on?
  • If he spends 50 per day, taken from his bank account the OP said, that would be over 1,000 in 3 weeks. It's very easy for a kid to spend 50 dollars in a day. It doesn't necessarily mean he is doing drugs. He could be just over spending on stupid shiit like fast food.

If you suspect drugs have him tested and go from there, but I think DH really needs to be on board before you do so.

If he only makes $100 a week, and spent $900 in three weeks I would want to know where he got the extra $600. If he had is saved, I doubt he'd blow that much on food.
