Parenting after a Loss

Feeding and spit up questions

DD turned 9w today. She sttn from 8ish to around 5 or 6am. During the day she eats 3oz every 1.5 to 2 hours. I try really hard to get good burps out of her in the middle and the end of her bottle. Sometimes she burps really well and sometimes not at all. She can spit up anywhere from not at all to what looks like a half oz even when getting good burps. Her Dr isn't concerned and said she'll grow out of it.

So...when did your LO start going more than 2 hrs between feeds? When did they increase their oz per feeding? It seems when i up her oz she spits up more. When did they outgrow spitting up?

Re: Feeding and spit up questions

  • The transition to longer time between feedings was around 6 months or so, it was shortly after we introduced solids. L spit up a ton even after he had solids, so at least 8 or 9 mos. We went through tons of bibs and lap pads.

This LO when he takes bottles at DC he takes 3 to 4 oz every 2 to 3 hrs and BF every 2 to 3 hours except his midnight to 5 am snooze. He doesn't really spit up though. I'm not really planning on increasing his feeding amount too much at a time. It seems like both the boys have been different and I'm not sure if it's because this LO is BF and L was fed both. I think you just have to feel it out, as far as how much and when.

The spit up will eventually stop though.

The problem with increasing if she finishes is that it seems she'll keep going even if full. Then it's a puke fest. She's definitely gaining weight appropriately so she is eating enough.

What I have heard about increasing is if the finish all of their bottles dry for 3 consecutive days, it's time to add an ounce.

^ That is such a good rule of thumb!  I'll have to keep that in mind for later :)

My DS was exactly like this.  I don't think he ever ate like a newborn.  He was pretty much at 4 oz. at every feeding (sometimes only two hours later), as early as eight weeks.  Obviously, there was a lot of spit up, until he could actually handle it :P

I would try to give him things to gnaw on, or teething toys, but honestly, even a pacier wasn't cutting it.  He just wanted that bottle nipple :)  So we just had to have lots of hit/miss moments where we offered just an ounce at first, to see if he just wanted to gnaw on the bottle first.   Eh, it worked half the time.  But mostly, if he wanted the bottle, he wanted it full D:

He outgrew his spitting up phase by around twelve weeks ~
