Baby Sign Language

I try to incorporate a few signs everyday (usually eat, more, I love you and a few others) and a lot of times I forget.. but just curious as to if anyone else is doing this and if your LO is starting to recognize signs yet?

DS LOVES when I sign "all done" after he's finished eating! I don't know if he actually understands what it means but it's so cute how excited he gets.

Re: Baby Sign Language

  • I started with my older girls around 7 months when we would eat solids. I only did more & finished at first because I feel like those are the two they would need early on. Around 10 months, they both started using them appropriately, and by a year had about 7 signs- eat, drink, cookie, fish, more, finished, help we used a lot.

  • We sign "Mom", "Dad", and "milk" to her...I figure I'll add more once she shows any signs of learning those....she doesn't respond back yet, and doesn't always even pay attention to me when I sign them, but I love sign language so I'll do them even if she never does it back.

  • We try as few with Elli. She hasn't tried any yet but hopefully soon. She started waving to people last week which I thought was pretty neat :)

  • I started this week just for fun. I do "more," "eat," and "drink." Mostly, he just sits in his highchair and smacks his hands on the tray over and over and grunts. My kid is a genius, I tell you!

Haha this is how DS eats lately. He'll smack his hand down and scoop up as much food as he can hold. If he's lucky, a 1/4 of it makes it to his mouth :)

We do milk, more and all done. She hasn't done any herself but I know she knows what at least milk means. She will immediately stop crying if I do it. Or if she's not crying she will start if I sign it and take too long to give it to her.

  • I have used sign with all of mine. I usually start when they are starting to try to "talk" - ie. good eye contact and babbling - so, around 6ish mo. My 4th actually signed really extensively until about 20 mo.

I've started "all done", "more", "eat", "sleepy", "bath" and the signs for the siblings and whatever food he's having. He mimics "all done" and laughs himself silly.

That is how I did it too. My LO was doing it pretty well by 9 or10 months. We did more, please, thank you, milk, all done, hungry. So 7 as well.

  • We have started with DD2, but we only do a few words. With DD1, we did milk, more, all done and thank you.
