Interesting appointment today & a question

At my appointment today I was told because of my pcos I was considered high risk so I will need to do the glucose test at my appointment next month and then it will be repeated again. I was really surprised about this because I have pcos for a long time but was not considered high risk with my last pregnancy and did not need two glucose tests.

I didn't know that the glucose test needed to be done twice if a pregnancy is considered high risk. Does anyone else with pcos need to do the glucose test twice?

On a side note, I did have an exciting moment today when my midwife surprised me by giving my a quick ultrasound so I could see the baby and he/she waved at us!!

  • I haven't heard that either.  I have PCOS and my OB never mentioned that.  But everyone is different :)

  • I haven't heard of PCOS making pregnancy high risk... But my OB is doing two GD tests for me too (but I'm not sure if that's due to the fact that i have PCOS or because I have a history of insulin resistance along with a fam history of type II diabetes)

I had GD in my last pregnancy so they are doing 2 glucose tests for me...But I've never heard of PCOS making a pregnancy high risk. I had a preterm birth last time and GD and they don't consider me high risk. Could your blood sugar have been elevated on your 1st trimester bloodwork that they're just being careful? I think I would probably ask a few more questions...it doesn't make a ton of sense!

I think I will call her and ask her about it. I was caught off guard and she seemed to just throw it in there at the end of the appointment that it wasn't until after that I started thinking it was weird... She didn't mention anything about my blood sugar being elevated but that will definitely be something I will ask her about. Thank you!

  • Newer research is linking PCOS with pre-diabetes, not that you now have or will have diabetes. But they have found that one possible cause of PCOS is increased blood glucose/sugar. Like I said, this is newer information so that may be why they didn't double test with past pregnancy. I don't know if they have definitively said PCOS means higher chance of gestational diabetes, but it makes sense to test now.
  • I have PCOS, this is my third viable pregnancy, and I've never been considered high risk. I've also never had gestational diabetes (knock on wood).

  • I have pcos and will be doing a 1 hour GTT thos week after coming off of glumetza Friday. Don't know how often my OB will want this repeated. Don't really think the test could harm anythkng. Just more useful information to try and make the pregnancy as healthy for you and baby as possible.

  • I'm a FTM and I have to have two. I had one at 12 weeks (passed with flying colors :) )  and my OB said she would order another at 28 weeks. I'm overweight (size 12/14) BUT when I asked her she said it wasn't so much my weight that caused concern but the fact that I have a HUGE history of type 2 diabetes in my family, entirely due to poor diets and no exercise. She didnt seemed concerned so Im not either. I figure it is just erring on the side of caution and I'm ok with that.
  • I'm high risk bc of multiple m/c, previous pre-term delivery, AMA and I had GD when I was pg with DS1. They gave me the glucose test at my 7 week appt!! I passed thankfully, but I think I have to take it 2 more times. Yuck.

I *think* that there is some relation between PCOS and higher risk of GD. I can't remember exactly where I heard that, but that may be why.

  • I had GD last time and was asked to check my sugar in the morning. If it was over 105 twice in a week I had to start metformin. I failed in two days. I won't be tested this pregnancy. I just monitor closely.
