1st Trimester

When to tell?

What is everyone's suggestion on telling? My first appt is next Friday and I'll be about 8 weeks. We've already told parents and a couple of best friends because I couldn't hide my symptoms any longer. Should we tell after the ultrasound or wait?

Re: When to tell?

  • I'll be 11 weeks tomorrow, and we've told the parents & siblings and a few other close family/friends.  I'm waiting until after my appointment on Tuesday when we'll hear the heartbeat to officially let the cat out of the bag :-)

In the end, it's totally up to you and when you feel comfortable.  We had a miscarriage in March at 5 weeks, but didn't realize it until almost 10 weeks, so I'm keeping it close until I get the confirmation on Tuesday.

    Good luck!

  • We have our first appointment on Tuesday and at that point I'll be about 5 weeks. We plan to tell our parents siblings and a few very close friends around 6 weeks. We won't make an official open announcement until the second trimester. But the people we will tell early are the same people we would turn to if something god forbid went wrong.
  • I told family well my mom told the family she didn't keep her mouth shut. An told close friends . But to tell everyone else we going to wait till 12 weeks. Maybe not that depend on my body reacting to keeping the baby.:/

  • I am waiting till first I hear the heartbeat!  But even then I will be cautious, I miscarried at 11 weeks last time and telling people after I told them all the good news was awful!  It was like reliving the pain everyday! So I am going to wait until I am good and ready.  First step is that heartbeat on the 26th!  I so hope to hear it since I never heard it last time!  :)
  • We have told close family and a few friends, but we won't publicly announce until after my next appt.; I'll be 15 weeks then.

  • We just went public today, and I'll be 13 weeks on Sunday. I've had two ultrasounds (7 weeks and 9 weeks), and the heartbeat was strong both times. I also got to hear the heartbeat again with the doppler at my appointment last week. Trying to be optimistic about our chances, but I don't think the worry of losing the baby will go away...
  • Thanks y'all! This is such a hard decision! I'm going to pray about it and talk with my husband and I guess we will tell when we feel that the time is right. The only thing about waiting is that we live in such a small town that people will find out.... Soon! And I'm a very petite person so I'm thinking I may start showing fairly soon.. But who knows! Thanks for the advice, it's always nice to hear from other expectant mommies! :
  • I don't think there is any "right" answer but keep in mind a couple of things:
    1. Until you give birth, miscarriage can happen. Yes, the probability goes down the farther you are along, but being pregnant does take some faith. I have known women to announce the moment they pee'd on the stick and had a healthy baby and others who waited until 14 weeks and then miscarried.
    2. I really think it depends on when you see the heartbeat. If you are seeing an RE, you will see the heartbeat usually between 6 to 7 weeks, whereas most women won't go in for their first ultrasound until 8 weeks or later. A lot of these women who are waiting until 11 to 12 weeks are waiting to tell because they haven't had an ultrasound yet which in my opinion is wise. I would say, at least wait until you see a strong heartbeat before letting everyone know. Again that doesn't mean you are out of the woods, but a good guideline.
