Spelling question

How would you spell Madeline and impressions/thoughts about it?  Asking for sis in law who just found out she was pregnant!  Wants pronunciation to be Mad-uh-Lynn.

  • Love the name! I've also known a Madelyn (and her mother spells it the same way so I feel confident it's not a uneek 'y')

  • I prefer it spelled Madeline or Madeleine. I think that Madeline would maybe be a bit less confusing though?

ETA: Please, do not spell it Madelyn. :)

  • I really love the Madeleine spelling and you can still have the pronunciation you are looking for.
  • I like Madeleine.
  • I know both a Madeline and Madelyn...pronounced differently.  So I would say Madeline is with the "line" sound and Madelyn is with the "lynn" sound.

Regardless of the whole history of the name, that is how I would pronounce each.

A true little French orphan wouldn't be called Mad-uh-line in the first place.  That is an English pronunciation and I have no idea why they decided to adopt it as the pronunciation of a French girl's name in the books/movies.  "I"s, and especially "in" and "ine" combinations do not make the same sounds in French as they do in English.

Mad-uh-lyn isn't the 100% correct pronunciation of the name in French, but it's a lot closer than Mad-uh-line.

  • Madeline or Madeleine.  I have two friends with Madelines and they both use the -lynn pronunciation.  I don't really like the -lyn spellings, especially just for the sake of pronunciation.
