Cloth diapers

Hi Ladies,

I posted this on the cloth diaper board but you ladies are my number one trusted board so allow me to repost:

I am sure you heard this question about a MILLION times so I apologize in advance.

I'm a FTM wanting to do cloth diapering and I just don't know where to start. I read/watched reviews after reviews but it just gets me more and more confused and stressed. We are registering on Amazon and I know we need to register for a variety of sizes/brands but I just don't know how much of each. Does anyone know any easy websites or hints on how to start a first stash?

Thanks

Re: Cloth diapers

  • The FAQs on the cloth diapering board have links to some really good blogs that have all this informtaion.

Also, scroll through the cloth diapering board for any threads where people ask for stash reviews.  I asked mine a few days ago and got some really helpful hints!

It really depends if you want to do prefolds, pockets, AIOs, etc.... but that's a great place to start.

  • I think everyone has their own preferences and recommendations. I'll be using disposables until the stump falls off. Then I'll be doing Flip brand covers and stay dry inserts until I introduce food, at 6 months, then I'll most likely go back to disposables. I'll get about 30 inserts and expect to wash every other day.

Look in your area for a class or a shop that offers classes.  Also there are some websites, I think cottonbabies.com is one, that offer trial packs and then you can exchange what you don't like for what you do like.

    good luck!

  • If you have a local cloth diaper store in your area I suggest visiting it. You can look at the different types of diapers in person and get lots of questions answered. Most retailers also offer a trial program so you can try a few different diapers on your LO and see what works best.

  • I have pained over creating a stash too! It's so confusing, especially when pro CD'ers share their dream stash and it's all different types and different brands.

I am doing disposables until he is big enough for the one size AIO's that I'm getting. I'm getting two brands of AIO's that get really good reviews. I have no desire to do prefolds and covers.

Really, I'm just going to see how it goes. I'm motivated by the convenience of always having a diaper around and not being that person that has to run to Walgreens at 2 AM for diapers. If we only CD part time or at home only then that's ok with me.

  • I have been researching CDing for a long time and it is even to the point that SO brags about how excited he is to start! If you have any questions just ask!!

  • I agree with the other girls, you need to figure out what type of diaper you want to start with.  You can always change so don't feel like you are stuck.  With that being said, I've never heard of many people buying much of the needed supplies or cloth diaper supplies off a registry.  I think most people feel more comfortable with items they are familiar with, unless the CD themselves.

  • Start with making a plan. Do you want to start right away? Or when one size will fit?

Then you can go from there.

If you start at birth, you'll want 24 to 36 changes. If you start at 3 to 4 months you'll want around 20 to 24 changes. It also depends on how often you want to wash.

And don't let the variety scare you. Set a budget, get your plan together and have fun buying diapers!

  •  For me, what I found easiest and less stressful was doing disposables for the first 8 weeks and then did OS pockets. I started with 14 and had to do laundry every night. I then added 24 more and I can do 2-3 days between washes if I needed/wanted to.

This time I'm getting 24 AIO NB's and I'll probably add at least 12 more OS to my stash.
