Pregnant after a Loss

T&Ps Needed: Abdomen Measuring Small

Hi ladies:

Went in for a sonogram today to see if my low-lying placenta had moved.  It did, which is a good thing, but they also told us that my baby's abdomen is measuring in the 6th percentile even though the rest of her is at a normal growth rate.  They said there is nothing to do now and to come back in in two weeks to see if she has grown, but suggested there is a possibility this is a sign my placenta may not be functioning perfectly and that, if things went poorly, I'd have to deliver early.

Has anybody had any experience with this?  If so, any idea what causes could be?  I don't have high blood pressure, smoke or have any of the other usual causes for this.

Re: T&Ps Needed: Abdomen Measuring Small

  • I don't have any experience but I hope on your next scan you see improvement and don't have to deliver early.

    *hugs*

  • This happened to me during my last pregnancy. I have two diagnosed blood clotting disorders (MTHFR and APS), yet even with daily blood thinner injections, they felt that most likely the placenta was not doing well due to a small clot.

How they described it to me was that when an IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) causes limited nutrition to come through, it is dispersed first to the baby's brain, then the limbs, and the last priority is to put fat on the abdomen.

Mine was discovered at a much later gestation than yours, at 34 weeks. The abdomen was two weeks behind. When they checked again, the abdomen had grown, but was still two weeks behind. At 38 weeks, I delivered a long, skinny, but healthy baby. I hope your ending is just as happy!

  • Currently going through this right now. I know it's scary, but hang in there and follow through with all the scans etc that they recommend. Ours started with short long bones at 27 wks, then 3 weeks later abdomen and femur measured below 5th. At my 37 wk scan last week, femur was at 5th and abdominal circumference was 2.3, head was good at 40th. Blood flow and fluid have been good, so they are planning to let him stay until 39 weeks. I have another scan tomorrow to make sure all is well.
Wishing you the best. They say there isn't much you can do, but make sure you are eating healthy and upping protein might help.

  • Thank you all!  I'm trying to stay positive and thing "grow" thoughts and up my protein, even if it isn't doing that much.  At least it gives me something to focus on for now.  For those of you going through this with me, my thoughts and prayers are with you as well!
  • Hi there!  I'm so sorry you're going through this.  My son was born at 37 weeks due to severe IUGR.  As far as I know, he measured small all over, not just in certain aspects.  He arrived healthy and happy, though he was even smaller than predicted (he was estimated at 4lbs4oz and weighed 3lbs 7.8oz).  If you have any questions for me, page me on July13.  (hugs!)

ETA: We still don't know the cause.  I didn't have any of the risk factors.
