3 year old up at night

My little guy has had a tough time transitioning into the big boy bed. At first he was horrified, now he's comfortable but he gets up at night and comes to find us. We have spent a lot of time training him to put himself asleep in the bed and my husband now sits in the hallway while he falls asleep. We used the method where you progress from the bedside. We have tried rewards for staying in bed all night but honestly I don't think he has control or consciousness to make good decisions in the night because many times he will just get up and lay in the hallway. We won't gate the door because he tantrums if for some reason he can't get out and I have worked long and hard on making sure he has positive feelings about sleep. Any ideas or shared experiences are appreciated.

Re: 3 year old up at night

  • I went into my parent's room if I woke up in the middle of the night until I was 12. So I think it's totally normal! :) Maybe see if there's anything he's looking for? Scared of the dark- leave a light on, wants a drink- make sure he has a cup.

Could you gate his room after he falls asleep or would this also freak him out?

  • Set up a sleeping bag on the floor of your room next to your bed?

Then he can feel that he's not alone/scared, but without waking you up.
