Pregnant after 35

Surprised at 37!

Hi Mommies,
I'm the mother to two wonderful boys ages, 8 and 2! My hubby and I found out this Monday we are close to 6 weeks pregnant!! We were shocked but excited! Honestly, I'm a little scared...we were expecting our first two but God's new plan has thrown me for a loop and I'm very nervous about my age! We had an ultra sound done and only saw a yolk sac and a tiny speck : going back the 29th to hopefully see a heartbeat and developing fetus. This little guy is already making me feel exhausted and sick!! And so it begins..... : what can I expect with this pregnancy now that I'm considered "at risk"? I was 34 with my last so didn't experience it.

Re: Surprised at 37!

  • I'm 36 and 5w2d with baby 4! My kids are 14,12 and 9 so it's been almost 10 years since my body's some this! We were not planning to have kids lol. Nature had this trick up it's sleeve for us too. It will be out first baby together and only lol. He has two and I have 3. Baby will round the family out at 6 kids lmao.

  • Welcome!

I'm 39 and got pregnant naturally, after being told by specialists it wouldn't happen that way and after various failed fertility treatments. I guess mother nature had her own plan and fertility treatments weren't part of it, haha.

I hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months!

  • Congrats and welcome!

I am 37, as well. Don't be nervous about your age!! My current OB has reprimanded me, politely, not to refer to myself as an old lady lol

I have learned a lot from others on here. There are new non-invasive VERY accurate chromosomal tests that have become available, just in the past year or so, that were not options for me just over 2 years ago. Harmony, Materniti21, and Verifi are some of those.  I'm still doing online research and trying to find out in my insurance will cover this test, but it means I could avoid having an amniocentesis, which is invasive to the baby.

Best wishes for H&H 9 months!

  • Thank you all! I certainly don't feel old and certainly don't act it!! I just see "at risk" and it makes me nervous! I can't wait to be able to know all is good and make the announcement to friends and family!

Agreed, 37 is not old and I certainly don't act it either!  I'm 37, will be 38 for delivery.  First pregnancy and totally surprised (and scared).  Doesn't help to see "at risk" and hear, "now that you're at that special age" when they're setting up your appointments.  I topped my day off by coming home to AARP emails!  They've been on my case since I turned 30!

The good: more ultrasounds hopefully covered by insurance=more pics that the young don't get!

  • I have been AMA for all three oft pregnancies. So far they have all been mostly uneventful... The doc does keep an eye on me but so far so good!
  • Hello Everybody,

I'm 36 and due 3/12/14.  My first child  will be 7 this September and it sure was a surprise to find out we're expecting another one. I'm scheduled to have a nurse counseling next week and I'm so freaking out. I really don't want to hear the "at risk" part L. What gets me, they already know my age since I've been going to the same clinic for years but still I have to wait 2 weeks to see the nurse not even knowing when my doctor apt will be. I don't feel right about this whole ordeal. Shouldn't I have an appt. at the earlier date ?

My question also is when was your first ultrasound?  With the first pregnancy I had only one  at 20 weeks. I was wondering if because of my age there will be more ultrasounds involved and/or allowed by insurance.

My son was born with congenital heart defect which makes me worry even more. I want to make sure this baby is healthy.

  • I am 36 and 10 weeks with my first child.  I have not heard "at risk" at all.  My Ob says my age is a non-issue unless an issue arises.  We are proceeding as normal. My first appointment was at 9 weeks and it was a long wait!  I am not getting my hopes really up until I hear the heartbeat on the 26th!  That will be such a relief!

My first ultra was at 8 weeks.  I hope they coded it as a "dating ultra."  We did it b/c I really couldn't pinpoint my last cycle.  I'm pretty sure I had the light period the first month i was pregnant and then I totally remember the "fake period" the second month (cramps, leaky feeling...running to bathroom to clean up a mess that wasn't there).  So I spent two months in the dark (which is kinda good b/c it's two months of me not stressing).  Anyway, long story short, I'm really grateful for the 8 week ultra.  I think I needed it to confirm what I couldn't believe. Then I switched OBs and they ordered another one, so lucky me has pics at 8 weeks and 10 weeks.  In reading your post, I'm thinking you should request a dating ultra b/c at 8 weeks you just may hear a heart beat too.  Good luck!

FYI you will get more responses if you post this as a new post. Just don't want you to be disappointed if you don't get the response you were hoping for. Also it's considered good board etiquette to post your introduction to the group separately rather than in response to someone else's post, that way everyone can see it and welcome you!

Welcome to the board and congrats! Some drs will treat you differently with AMA while others will go about things casually unless there is a need for concern. One thing you should count on is being offered more screening tests since the risk of abnormalities goes up with age. They may also want to do more ultrasounds. As far as symptoms, everyone is different just as every pregnancy is different. Sorry you're feeling so sick, I had it bad in first tri and had to be put on meds. Hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones and it won't last long. Best of luck to you!

  • I am 37 too (36 when I found out I was pregnant)  I hate that whole "high risk" term, it scares the bejesus out of you! The only thing so far that was different from a "younger" pregnancy for me was I took advantage of taking the Harmony test.

Happy and health pregnancy to you!
