Parenting after a Loss

When does LO learn about gravity?

I swear DS thinks he can fly or that he will miraculously float from the bed/couch down to the floor.  If I didn't catch him he would crawl right off of the couch or bed.  Also when he's sitting up or stands holding onto something he will just let go.  He could sit up for 30 minutes playing with toys and then out of nowhere just decide to let himself fall straight back.  He is not a cautious baby by any means and now that he's pulling up on things and attempting to take steps it makes me a nervous wreck!  Will he at some point realize that he shouldn't do this?

Re: When does LO learn about gravity?

  • At that stage we started teaching our guys to get off the couch/bed safely. We taught them to roll to their belly and then slowly slide feet first off. Teaching them that before they were climbing has been a life saver! Now we just say, "go backwards", and they remember what to do.

I'm really not sure what age gravity starts making sense to them, I don't think we're there yet. But kids are very very resilient! I remember freaking out when J banged his head into a wall for the first time when he was cruising and fell. Now it's a miracle if they don't both hit their head that hard or harder every hour.

I don't remember the answer but they talked about it in the documentary "The Science of Babies." It was so interesting!

I watched this, too! It was super interesting. They demonstrated with babies of different ages crawling across a plexiglass floor. It wasn't until they reached a certain age - and I don't remember what it was, either - that they would stop before crawling where they couldn't see the floor anymore.
