Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Potty training methods you use / tips

My DD is showing more signs of being ready for potty training. She will be 2 August 20th if that matters. I have been waiting for her to recognize that she is going and to get uncomfortable in a dirty diaper. She is now recognizing when she goes poo and (I think) pee, sometimes, so I think it is time to start doing more. Currently she will sit on her potty next to us when we go potty, she will pretend her dolls are going on her potty and more recently will sit on her potty with her diaper on while she goes. I haven't been able to get her diaper off and her onto the toilet between the time she tells me  and the time we get to it. (We have one potty in the front room and one in the bathroom)

So what method is working for you and do you have any tips?

I would like to stay away from rewards but am not against something like stickers if it works. (No candy or sweets though) I have heard giving rewards is bad because they shouldn't be expecting a reward for doing everyday tasks or something like that...

I tried at that age with dd and she wasn't ready but she was ready a couple months ago and 3 day training worked for her with rewards

  • DD has been telling me when she pees or poops for a couple weeks now but she pretty much laughs in my face not literally when I sit her on the potty. I will continue to encourage her using the potty but I know she is no where ready to potty train

  • We used the 3 day poty training method when DD1 as 2.5yrs old.  She did great and we had a sticker chart on the bathroom wall. Everytime she went in the toilet she got to pick a sticker for her chart.  When she filled up each row she got a dollor store 'prize' or 3 m&m's.  That lasted about 3weeks and then it just fadded out.  GL

I'm on team cold turkey.  Seriously, we did a three day method with DS when he was 2.5.  I hope to do something similar with DD.

i have no desire to use pull ups, wipe out mini potties, or drag out training for months.

  • The 3 day method worked perfectly on DD at 25 months. I used marshmallows for the 3 training days. After that I gave it if she remembered and asked. It was probably by day 5 she forgot about the reward.
Whatever you do, make it very simple and very consistent. I've seen epic fails with people who went over the top with charts, a bucket to pick prizes from, a hundred books stacked next to the potty for reading, setting timers, etc

  • Baby Center's 3 day method is pretty good - the "reward" is a song & dance. We've since tapered it down to a "good job!" Just roll back the carpets. Your kid sounds ready IMO.

  • I know the three day method interested me. I will do my research and try that when she gets a bit older. And I like the song and dance reward, that will be perfect. Thank you everyone!
