Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Self-feeding question

Hi all,

My daughter is almost 9 months old, and we've been having trouble with getting her to hold her own bottle.  She also hasn't really taken to a sippy cup. In addition, she doesn't seem to really like feeding herself table foods.  She eats just fine (Gerber's 2nd foods) and drinks plenty of formula, so I'm not concerned about her diet.  I guess I'm wondering when your babies started showing interest in feeding themselves.  I'm not sure how to get her to become interested.

Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer!

Re: Self-feeding question

  • I don't really have any advice but my 8 month old has no interest in holding his own bottle or using a sippy. He loves using a real cup though so if I don't need him to be dry and have the time to clean up, I just give him the sippy with the lid off.

  • DD started holding her bottle at 11 months. At that point I switched to a cup, ditched, the bottles, and never looked back. DD had no problem with the transition.

I think she started feeding herself finger foods at like 9 months.

  • I think my LO is mor interesting I banging the spoon and trying to set it on the table than eating from it. Any food that gets in there is incidental to her feeling and touching stuff.

she can't really lift the sippy cup, but she gives straws and real cups a shot.

But ya, every child is different. She is 7.5 months, not crawling...trying...but not getting anywhere. She still hasn't cut her first tooth....and she babbles, but nothing sounds like mamma or dada. They all have their own pace, I guess.

  • My DS started holding his own bottle only this past week, but took to the sippy cup really early. He hasn't mastered feeding himself. I let him play with the spoon and he loves to throw the food on the floor. I think the only thing that made it to his mouth was a Cheerio and I think he was surprised that it was food and not a toy. I just keep letting him play knowing one day he'll figure it out.

  • We started giving her little bits of food starting at 6-7 months and now by 8 months she can 'rake' up all her food and self-feeds everything. She just started really getting the hang of a sippy within the last 2 weeks. She has never taken a bottle. Each baby is different, I would give her little finger foods and a sippy of water at each meal and keep letting her practice!
