Adoption

to go along with my DIA post

if any of you who did DIA took out a loan who did you use. Our bank does  not offer adoption loans??

Re: to go along with my DIA post

  • We took out a loan against my husband's retirement account.  He is military and the retirement is a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).  The interest rate is 1.9% or something like that and the interest we pay is paid back to ourselves in the form of a contribution to our retirement.  There was a $10K limit to this so we had to come up with the rest of the money ourselves.

  • We used our regular bank and DH's 401K.

Keep in mind that there is the adoption tax credit that may be applied  after all is said and done. (For details, check out the IRS website and ask others who have claimed it.) We are not there yet so I do not know the ins and outs.

Check with your employer(s) to see if they do any type of matching for adoption. Some companies do and that can help with your costs.
