Baby Names

Finn vs. Finlay

hey everyone! my dh and I have decided tha we are going to name our daughter Finn Elisabeth. our only question is, should we name her Finlay Elisabeth and have her go by Finn, or should we just name her Finn Elisabeth? either way she will be called Finn. thank you!

Re: Finn vs. Finlay

  • Oh boy, literally! Finn on a girl? If you must, Finley. Does the A make it more feminine?

  • Finlay nn Finn Elisabeth is nice. Congrats on deciding!

Edit: I prefer the spelling Finley.

  • Finlay?? I would pronounce that just how it looks, which sounds funny to me.

    What about Finley???

Either way NMS for a girl

  • thank you! Finlay is a family name (it was dh's dad who passed away recently, he went by Finn). I really do prefer the spelling Finley to Finlay, but it means a lot to dh that if we did choose to do Finlay instead just Finn that it be spelled the same way, so im ok with it! thanks again!

I much prefer Elizabeth Finlay LastName. I just can't get behind Finn (or Finley) on a girl.

ETA: The subject of this post (Finn vs. Finlay) made me think that we'd be discussing names for a little boy. Just sayin'.

Finn on a girl is pretty terrible, esp right now with Corey Monteith...

A friend of mine's middle name is Findley (family name) and I like it. How about Elizabeth Finley?

  • Finn is all boy to me but I can totally see it as a nn.    Finley would be a much better formal name  imo                   I don't like the -Lay at all

*edit sorry just saw the Finlay spelling was after family     I still think Finn-LAY on a girl just isn't a good thing           Elisabeth (love with an S!) Finlay  nn Finn would be adorable I think

Oh my gosh. Please, please, please, pretty please do not name a girl Finn.  My son is Finn and I can handle it getting super popular for boys, but not becoming a girl crossover.

That said, I think Finlay is a great choice bc of the family name connection.  If I were you, I'd go with Elisabeth Finlay.  I think that's a beautiful girl's name. Unlike Finn, which is a boy's name.

I don't understand this connection but I've never seen the show Glee. I only know that guy was on Glee because its all over the place.

I agree that of you're going to use a masculine name then it's better in the middle name spot. That's not what you asked though, so I suppose I would prefer just Finn.

  • I like it! Finn or Finlay. I know a girl who named her daughter Finley. The baby goes by Fin, Finny, Finner. I think it's adorable for a girl.

How about on a grown woman? Still adorable?

  • I like both names, even for a girl.  I've never known anyone named Finley or Finlay, so it doesn't have any gender connection for me.  I think with Elizabeth, though, that Finn Elizabeth almost sounds like one long name when said together.  So, I would opt for Finlay.  I also have seen the name Finlyn, which I thought was different, and really cute.  And not something I'd expect a boy to be named!

    Finner? LOL.

That makes me think of how my SIL calls their baby girl Lillers (baby's name is actually Lily). Drives me crazy.

  • Oh I was about to say Finlay nn Finn, but then saw girl. I don't care for it for a girl, but if you must... Finlay, but not the nn of Finn.
  • I think Finley is more feminine, and more widely associated with girls.

Finn is 100% boy name, IMO. (I don't hate it as a NN for a girl, though)

  • I like Finlay for a girl and the meaning for your family is special. However, when I see Finn I think of a boy. That is my oldest son's name.
