High-Risk Pregnancy

Pregnancy induced Thyroid Issues?

Hello ladies! I haven't visited this board in a few years, and I can't really say I'm glad to be back.

When I was pregnant with my son now 2, my cervix was shortening because of a LEEP and I was monitored biweekly and put on medications. My son ended up being 9lbs 4oz and a csection and born at 38w5d!

I'm now 8w pregnant and my OB called to say that my thyroid number was high over 3 when it is supposed to be under 2.5. so I have low thyroid hypothyroid and it is only pregnancy related. I was prescribed the levothyroxine and a followup appt with an endocrinologist. Just scared because Dr. Google tells me that my baby and I will die. Anyone have this happen? Any success stories?

I just didn't want to have to stress about this pregnancy until the cervix stuff started again around 16 weeks. I feel completely robbed of ever enjoying a stressfree pregnancy :. Ok, pity party over. Thanks for your responses.

  • Welcome back !!!

Dr Google is a gift and a curse. I have hyperthyroidism but currently in remission. My endo has always told me you can cause serious birth effects and danger to yourself if pregnant and thyroid goes untreated. That being said you don't fall into that category because you are getting treatment.

As far as cervix have they offered a preventive cerclage instead of the lets watch and see approach? That would actually worry me more then the thyroid!!!

  • I'm on levothyroxine as well. Can't remember my TSH at 8 weeks but I'm now in the 1.6 range. Its really not a big deal. I take a pill every morning and get my thyroid tested every month when I'm already in the OB's office for a visit. So far, I went from 25 to 50 mg but have been staying put at 50 mg for the past four-five months.

Stay away from Dr. Google! Seriously, there are plenty of things to stress about in pregnancy but this isn't one of them.

ETA: I also have a short cervix and had an emergent cerclage put in at 20 weeks. Will you request a cerclage? Your OP didnt mention if you'd had one the first time. Might be something to talk to your docs about at your 12 and 16 week appt - I think they wont put them in before 14 weeks, but its good to get educated.

  • I have Hypothyroidism as well. I only get blood work once a trimester. At my last check it was at around a 3. She said normal range was .5-5 so that I was fine. I get my blood taken again next week. I have been told you are absolutely fine as long as you take your meds according to the directions like PP said and stay monitoered.
