According to my First Trimester Screening, the ultrasound shows a really healthy baby. However, due to mainly my age my pregnancy is now classified as 'high risk' based on statistics. Statistically, my risk of having a baby with Down's syndrome is 0.47 whilst the Department of Health claims the risk of fetal loss due to an amniocentesis is 0.5 to 1.0!!! Where's the real high risk here? I'm sick of doctors compairing my results to irrelevant data!! Does anyone else have experience with this?
Re: Amniocentesis Advice Please
I did as well but decided that I needed to know for sure. I went last week when I was 35 weeks to get the amnio done and there was no issues. It was uncomfortable, but not painful and was able to walk, sit up and do everything I wanted except clean and go up and down stairs for 4 hours.
Depending on how far along you are, they consider the amnio done after 35 weeks it is just considered preterm labour and they were completely prepared for him to come now.
That's really helpful; it's a relief to learn I can still get the amnio done at lets say, 19 or 20 weeks if the ultrasound does not look good all of a sudden.
Information on how the test feels is also much appreciated, thanks again.
Why not have the Maternit21 test done, you qualify because of age and chance of issue based on screening?
Not invasive at all, just two vials of blood and have your results 7-14 days later
We refused amnio with DS #1 and did maternit21 for DS #2
This exactly. Is this an option for you? Non-invasive and accurate. There is no risk involved since they take your blood not anything from the baby.
