Sleep sacks - Yay or Nay?

Ever since we weaned DS off the swaddle, he's been sleeping with the sleep sack.  At first it was for warmth, now it's mostly to keep his chubby legs from getting caught in the slats.

Are you still using sleep sacks for your LO?  If not, does your LO get his/her legs stuck?

DH wants to wean DS off the sack - DH worries that once DS learns to pull up and sit up in the crib (he hasn't yet), the sleep sack will tangle up and cause DS to lose his balance (and hit his head against the crib).  I'm like, what's the big deal if he bangs his head against the crib?  OTOH, perhaps one can say, what's the big deal if he gets his legs caught?

Just wondering what you guys are doing, esp since many of your LOs are now pulling up/standing up in the crib...

  • yay

he seems to pull himself up just fine with it on.

it's so hot out and I like to just do the sack with a diaper.

  • DD usually just sleeps in a diaper. She had her leg through the slats at one point while she was sleeping, but she got it out on her own just fine.  She pulls up and sits back down fine.

  • Yay. It's an extra sleep cue for him and with the a/c on it can get chilly. It hasn't prevented him from pulling up to a seated/standing position, and honestly he can still get his legs caught in the slats, given how loose the sleep sack is on the bottom.

  • I didn't properly read the post

E has been also sleeping in regular pyjamas, no sacks, all the time.

Legs in the slats has never really been an issue. I move him if I notice but he's never gotten stuck.

LO is happy in her sack. Doesn't seem to affect her mobility. She can spend ages looking for her feet though.

All of this. We went from swaddle to Merlin sleep suit to sleep sack. She naps without it but I think she knows sleep sack is sleepy bedtime.

  • Yay. It's just a part of bed time and nap routine. We have a breathable bumper so getting stuck in the slats wouldn't be an issue really, but the times I've tried to ditch the sack cause too many problems trying to get him down. I'm not sure naps would even happen without it at home. When he has it on, he knows it's sleep time.

  • We ditched the sacks once it got warm out. Lucas sleeps in just his cloth diaper or a onesie.  Legs getting caught haven't been a problem yet.  : )

  • We don't use a sleep sack, and she's never gotten her arms or legs stuck in the slats.
  • we do naps in teh sack but not bed.  naps she is usually in a onsie and thats it so the sack is for warmth but at night footie pj's.  she stands up in the crib just fine

Yay.  I think it makes bed more cozy if you are not using blankets.  also, it keeps the ac chill off and lets ds know it is bed time.  DS1 used a sleep sack until he was almost 2 and started using blankets.  He could stand and even take some teps in a sleep sack.

  • We are still using a sleep sack even though DS is crawling and pulling up in the crib. He doesn't have a problem doing this in the sleep sack. I do want to eventually wean him off of the sleep sack, probably when he is around a year old. I don't know how blankets are going to work though because he moves around so much.

  • DD2 has no issues crawling, sitting up, or even pulling up with her sleep sack on.  In the summer, we put her in a short sleeved onsie and a sleep sack and she's fine.  I'm probably going to buy some heavier ones for the winter.  At this age (and till probably about 3 or 4) they don't use blankets properly - they just don't keep them on.  So it will either be a heavier sleeper or a sleep sack.
