Car seat logistics - too big for carrier, but not walking

Our girls are almost 9 months. One is crawling all over the place and is thisclose to walking while the other isn't really interested in crawling yet. Right now, MH and I are able to ride together to work, so we can do drop-off & pick-up for DC together. They are both still under the weight limit for the carriers, so we can do it alone if we have to.

However, they are getting close to the 22lb weight limit and while one may be walking by the time she exceeds that limit, I'm not really sure how stable she's going to be. So how do you do it when you have to get both to and from the car (like at DC) when they're out of the carriers but not walking. Picking up one out of the seat is simple enough, but then what??

  • I carried both (and still do fairly often when I don't want them running around for whatever reason).  It took a while to get used to, but to put them in the car I would hold them both, put one in the car seat one handed, put my foot up on the inside of the car, sit the other baby on my knee, and strap the first baby in.  Taking them out I would do it in reverse and have one baby on my knee (kind of between my body and the car seat so she can't fall or wriggle off) and unstrap the other baby.  It sounds more difficult then it is.

  • I use the double stroller to get them in and out of DC every day. It's not ideal but I've got it down pat now and it doesn't take long. People are also very polite and always offer to hold the doors for us.

    You're my hero!!

I have this dilemma fast approaching, too. I was thinking of putting one in the Ergo, though that sounds like a pain. I'd really like to avoid buying a single stroller when we already have a double stroller, but then if I use the double stroller it's so big and bulky to be leaving at daycare. Ugh. I figure I'll try out a couple of different ways and see what sticks.

  • When I lived on the second floor and had to get both down the stairs I would wear one and carry one to the car. Now that we have a house I would carry both to the car. Place one in the seat without strapping in, walk to the other side and strap the other in and then come back and strap the first in. I could do it like PP said about having one sit on my knee but mine don't always sit still LOL. I do that when we are leaving the car though.

We live in a second floor condo, which is why I never considered a stroller (and I never really wore them).  Once they're more mobile you can put one on the floor behind the passenger/driver seat.  I started doing that about a month ago and wish I had done it sooner.  They love climbing around and popping up in middle.  We play peekaboo while I strap one in, then I go around to the other side and grab the other one.  I would guess you could do this when they get good at crawling.  The only downside is you have to keep your car very clean.
