Working Moms

Nanny Times and TIming

We just moved (HOORAY!). We love our new area.  I love that the school the girls will attend is straight in front of our house, 6 houses away, with a clear view of the front door from our front door.

I work from home.

I would like to employ a nanny 3-4 afternoons per week from 3:00 - 5:30.  Sometimes I would want her to run one or both of the girls (in our car) to/from an activity.  The idea is to get them a snack, get them started on homework, etc.  They are going into 4th grade and K.

Questions....

Does that sound reasonable?

If I wait until September to see how our schedule is, will I "miss out on all the good nannies"?  When would you hire based on a school start date of August 26th?

  • Sounds reasonable. That is was I did during this past school year. I watched 2 school age boys and brought LO with me. I was there from 3:30-6 and occasionally brought them to sports practice. I made sure that they had a snack, did homework, and didnt watch too much tv ;) it was a really good pt job.

you should be able to find someone at anytime. This may be great job for a sham or college student. I would put a feeler ad out now and see what happens. Craigslist is ok, but I have found the best jobs on care.com

  • I was in a similar position last year my mom was watching the kids FT but I wanted a sitter in the afternoon so she could go home earlier. I had a friend doing it for the summer and was looking for someone to start beginning of September. I posted an add on care.com at the end of July. That gave me time to view applicants, do phone interviews, and meet with my top choices. If I were you, I'd start looking now. If you want a local college student, they should know their class schedule and availability by now.

I would start looking now and just be open with your start date.  College kids are a great resource for this!  I did some part time work just like you are describing when I was in college for about $10 a hour I think.

Care.com is a great resource for this too.  We found our FT nanny on there.

  • Ditto PPs, start looking now but be up front about start date. It took us a good month to find our p/t nanny from placing the ad to her starting. Plus you can always get a few practice runs in - go out on a date or something to see if it's a good fit.

I would guess you'll end up with a college student or someone looking to supplement income like a SAHM or with another p/t job.  We used care.com to find our p/t nanny, she had another p/t job and was looking to get more hours.

    Good luck!

  • Care.com and sittercity.com are good resources.  I think what you will find for those hours is a babysitter rather than a nanny.
