mastitis?

I think I'm getting mastitis. I have a clogged duct and there is a red area on my breasts and last night I had a bad case of the chills, I'm not sure if I had a fever. Is this mastitis?  It's not painful yet and I'd like to prevent this.  Do I need antibiotics now or can I pump out?  TIA

Re: mastitis?

  • call your doctor. ?sounds like it and it can get bad fast.

  • ditto pp - the sooner you catch it the better.

  • Sounds like it to me.  Mine started with chills, my breast was red and painful and felt like my skin was on fire... I then got a fever and spent Thanksgiving in misery.  The next day I got antibiotics :)  Felt better after about 24 hours.  GL
  • Nursing as much as possible will relieve the clog a lot better than pumping.  There is more advice for relieving clogged ducts on kellymom.com

Personally, I rested and nursed as much as possible and rode it out for 24 hours.  Each time (all 3) I felt better within 24 hours and didn't need antibiotics.  If I wouldn't have felt better I would have called my doctor for meds.

If you can avoid antibiotics I would, they increase your risk of thrush which is 100x worse.  (I had that, too.)

  • It definitely sounds like mastitis. I have to disagree with pp, if it's mastitis and not a clog you'd be safer to get the antibiotics. Mastitis is a deep tissue infection and it can get very dangerous very quickly.
