Baby hats or caps

One of the items on my packing list is to have a hat for LO.

It'll be August onviously. Is it still necessary to keep caps on newborn heads if they are bundled up? I haven't bought any. And the ones I found on target online aren't the cutest.

And my birth center doesn't give you any like other hospitals might.

Re: Baby hats or caps

  • Great question, I have a few hats only because I've always seen newborns with them.

  • It might be nice to still have a couple--figuring though it's August, LO will be in AC a good bit. We didn't worry about hats much though once DD came home (and that was in Nov.) because we kept our house warm. In the hospital, def. because they keep it cool. So may depend on the temp at your birth center. Honestly, the hospital ones are nice and lightweight. If you search on Etsy you can find some of the lightweight hospital type ones (some decorated, of course). If you just want something to have in case, may be best to go with cheap and lightweight.

  • Yes, you want hats. Your body is a very warm 98 degrees which your LO is very used to. While it's summer, s/he will still be in air conditioning so you'll want to keep that little head covered when you are inside.

  • Babies lose a lot of heat through their head which is why hats/caps are recommended. Like PP said, I'd definitely suggest a hat/cap while you are at the hospital and perhaps while traveling in a cool airconditioned car. I live in Florida but plan to have LO wearing little hats until we make it home from the hospital. And even then, depending on how cool we keep the house.

We always kept hats on during the first week or two in the a/c. They have a hard time regulating their temps and they lose a lot of heat through their head.

That's crummy that they don't give you hats. Our actually has volunteers that knit hats. It's really cool and they make all sorts of neat colors and designs.

  • I don't think they are really a need but you may want to have a couple. My daughter was born in July and I think we rarely used a hat on her. She didn't really keep them on her head anyway. Anytime she moved it would pop off her head and I spent more time putting them on so after a while I just quit putting them on her head. If it was cold outside I would say for sure.

  • I've never used hats.

  • I very rarely used hats with my first two children after we left the hospital. They were both summer Florida babies who were in constant a/c too.

  • I used hats for the first few days inside, but if cold outside I always put a hat on them.

  • I so totally just went back to look at my coming home pics of DS to see if we put a hat on him ... and we did, which is making me LOL because we lived in FL at the time, and all he had on was a onesie. And a hat! WHY? lol

I think mostly we looked at it as a little bit of protection for his head. But really, you don't need them!

  • DD was 5lbs 3 oz when she was born. They had to keep taking her and putting her under the heating lamps (or whatever they are called), because she was having a hard time keep her temp regulated. So she wore hats for a few weeks after she was home.

I bought a few hats, not sure if I will use them. I have them just in case though.

  • I have some hats that go with outfits. I do plan to put one on baby in the hospital and when we go out somewhere with AC but probably not otherwise at least while it's still hot outside.

  • I'm going with yes, due to the AC they'll be in.  I purchased two crocheted hats on etsy for cheap that will go with anything LO has on and will keep them in those for at least the first week or two.

  • I say def need hats. The nurse at the hospital and our pediatrician explained about in excess how my babies lose heat through their heads, especially right after birth. I asked our pediatrician about how to keep baby cool since it will be still hot in the summer and her response was not to worry about keeping him cool but keep him out of drafts. He said his little body will be way cooler than mine and heat should not be an issue. I found cute hats at Children's place and Target. I want a white infant baseball cap so badly so he can look like his daddy but I can't find a small one anywhere!!
  • I never used hats. Even in the NICU, neither wore a hat.

I think they're such a pita to keep on.

  • Definitely a few, at least.

DS had a low body temp (still does, like his mama) and they actually ended up putting TWO hats on him at the hospital. He probably wore hats for a few months after birth.  Good thing is he is a rare two year old that likes beanies and baseball hats, and its so cute now!!

  • Probably don't have to have a bunch, but a couple would probably be nice due to arctic AC units.

It can be a bit more expensive, but I love melondipity.com. Their hats are gorgeous and unique!
  • You tend to lose the most heat from your head. While it's warm outside, your room may be chilly for the baby (or your home if you have the air conditioner on). I woudl recommend picking up a pack of thinner ones for sure.

With our first, our nurses actually advised against it. They said studies have shown increased risk of SIDS in babies who were wearing hats continuously. I would only use them if going out in the cold or the have a temp regulation problem.
  • I just looked back at pictures of DD and other than in the hospital or outside in the dead of winter I have zero pictures of her in a hat. We must not have used them!

DD has always been a little heater. I'm sure I didn't use it because she didn't need it.  I have faith that you'll be able to figure it out. ;)

i thought it was opposite. babies generate heat and not to over dress them in the summer. dress the baby the way you would dress yourself. hummm?
