I'm so confused. goggle isn't much help. I'm confused. is this car seat combo thing called something specific that I can google? I'm looking for something to buy that's going to take us from baby through little kid [at least].
we are thinking bugaboo but it says adaptable to various car seats... so that means I have to buy a car seat also... right? if that's the case then why not spend the money on the car seat and get just a car seat carrier? but then I can only find car seat carriers that are for infant... so that's not going to work for a larger car seat that will fit infant through kid.
Bugaboo adapts to the Peg Perego carseat and the Graco Snugfit (Snugride??). I got the Peg Perego. I don't know if there is a snap & go carrier for the Peg....but it snaps into the Bug, so you wouldn't need it. You only use the carseat and the stroller combination for the first few months anyways.....so spend more time researching the stroller and then find a carseat that works with it.
ok - this one says that parents have used it through 2 years old... Graco MetroLite Travel System - Regal - has anyone heard of it? I'm guessing i'm searchign for a travel system...
you are not going to find a car seat carrier that holds a full sized car seat b/c you leave them in the car. the difference with an infant seat is the base stays in the car and the seat comes apart from it. there is no seat that does that for an older child.
IMO- you want an infant seat and then a bigger seat. the seats that hold a baby from infancy to toddlerhood are not as safe for infants. an infant seat is designed for exactly what an infant needs.

OH! thank god you are here. ok - so yes, I do have to buy a car seat and it will snap in but I will only use the travel snap and go thing for a few months... is that because the kid becomes too big?

oh, and you have to have a car seat, period. it's the law. there is no stroller that turns in to a car seat, if that is what you are looking for. only strollers that hold infant carriers and, again, once the baby is out of an infant carrier you no longer remove the seat from the car.
You're going to have to spring for 2 car seats.... I promise you that you won't want to even think about carrying the bigger seat... It's HEAVY.... there are a million choices... we bought the Chicco Keyfit 30 and an extra base for DH's car... we bought the Trevi stoller... it's smaller like and umbrella stroller and can be used without the car seat, but the infant seat will also snap into it... It's our light easy to use stroller. We have the BOB Revolution for lots of walking (and DH runs with it) and we take it "off road" places like hiking in Maine.. You can buy an infant seat adaptor for it, but we didn't.. The "convertable" car seat is for when they are bigger (we moved Luca at 8 months)... It goes all the way up to 65 lbs. We bought 2, one for each car. It's not super easy to install.. after a year it can be turned to face forward... Moral of the story.. You need an infant and a convertable car seat.. You will want some combo of carseat/stroller that works together for at least 6 months... and it's worth EVERY penny...
ok - so car seats will come and go with the size of the kid... but you can find a stroller that will last through little kid... ok. i was thinking there was a unverisal one - but i was all turned around.
I think the book Baby Bargains is really helpful in sorting all of this stuff out.
Infant seat - has a base that stays in, but the "bucket" can come out and either be carried or snapped into a stroller (sometimes a travel system stroller - sometimes not) or into a frame like a snap n go... depending on the infant seat you get, it will last anywhere from a few months to past a year (Graco Safeseat, etc are bigger). But babies get big enough that you most likely will just leave the car seat in the car if they are closer to a year and still using it.
Convertible seat - most use these after the infant seat but some use instead - infant seats usually crash test better for little ones, and the infant seat is convenient. These stay in the car and last into the toddler/early preschool years.
Strollers - some love travel systems, some create their own travel system by combining a seat with a different stroller, some love using a frame and then having a lightweight or other stroller later.
You know my vote! GO with the Bug!! It will last until your baby is 3-4 (or doesn't need a stroller anymore). My 3 yr old nephew sat in mine the other day while we were at the zoo. It comes with a Pram and a seat, so it will last from infancy to toddlerhood and beyond. You buy an infant carseat and it snaps in. But you'll only use that when you're out and about while the baby is very young. Once they become 15+ lbs, it is too heavy to transport them around in the infant carseat. So, you'll use the seat that comes with the stroller instead.
We have a Phil & Ted's sport and a Graco SafeSeat (we'll buy another carseat, probably a Britax one when she outgrows the Graco.)
That has worked perfectly for us for the past three months - she went straight into the P&T at two weeks old and if I don't want to haul the stroller out, I just carry her in the wrap or sling. We just bought the car seat adaptor for the P&T though because she was falling asleep on our runs, but waking up when I'd put her back in the car. So this way she stays asleep for a little bit longer.
The Maclaren Techno XLR also works this way. It reclines back far enough for a newborn but is also compatible with the Graco snugride (and possibly another seat), then it can be used for a child up to 65 lbs.

The Orbit toddler carseat CAN dock onto the Orbit stroller. It isn't the preferred method, but it will work. They recommend it for travel so you only have to haul the carseat and stroller base.
My vote for you Opal is the Uppa with the adaptor for the infant carrier. It is what we would have gotten if we didn't have the pram.
Have you actually seen the Uppa in person? (I'm assuming you're talking about the UppaBaby Vista). I was wanting one until SIL got hers - it's huge. Heavy, bulky huge. Hard to navigate and very wide. Just a heads up in case you haven't seen it in person
I do have the uppababy g-lite which I LOVE but it's an umbrella stroller.
