banging head on floor

My ds does this when I believe he is frustrated or looking for attention. He used to do it standing against the front door. lately he gets down on the grown and bangs his head. I usually catch him quick enough so he dosent hurt himself. I have heard this behavior is developmental. Please share any thoughts on this. Also, is there a typical age range where they lighten up on this or stop altogether?

PS. DS is pretty verbal so I dont think its too much of an issue of him not telling us something.

Re: banging head on floor

  • DD1 first started hitting objects when she was about 20m. We never disciplined bc we figured it was her experimenting and dealing with her frustrations. Then she started hitting DH and I which of course we did address. She stopped and just recently started head butting things instead. We just let her and try not to draw attention to it.

  • My DD bites her fingers when she gets really mad at me. I calmly tell her it's g,oing to hurt or something similar but it doesn't really help.

DS has done this, as does another boy in our play group. I've read it's more often boys than girls. My son is also very verbal. At one point, I had luck asking him to please use his hands to hit the wall instead of using his head. (He would get upset when I had to go to the bathroom and stop playing. Imagine!)
I think a lot of it had to do with being overtired. He hadn't done it in quite some time. But recently our schedule's been off again. So, he's started doing it every so often again.
I just looked it up again recently, and one lady suggested it had to do with food colorings, etc. Possible in our case as we pretty much avoid sweets. But, I've been giving him some "traffic lights" (red, yellow and green m&m's) out of my trail mix.
