Parenting after a Loss

I know nothing about bottles!

mobile: "I know nothing about bottles!"

I have been back to work since July 3rd, and thank goodness DD finally decided she would take a bottle! So she's been eating pumped breast milk while I work 9 hours a day, and she no longer hesitates. My question is, how much should a 14week old be consuming during those 9 hours? Right now she is having 3 bottles containing 5oz each. She usually wakes up to nurse in the very early morning between 1am5am, and then again at 6:45am if she wakes up before I leave. When I get home from work as 4pm she then usually nurses 3 more times before bedtime. Do you think those 15oz total during my workday are enough? Is 5oz per serving too much for her age? So far she's only had breast milk, no formula yet.

Re: I know nothing about bottles!

  • DD started daycare at 14 weeks and was taking 3oz of BM every three hours. Once home, I would BF on demand and it was more frequent than that.

I would BF her at 7am before leaving for work, she would get a bottle at 10, 1, and I would pick her up by 4 and BF. On days that I had late meetings, she would get another bottle at 4 if I couldn't pick her up.

K is 14.5 weeks and takes two 5 oz bottles and one 4.5 while at DC for about 8.5 hours a day. Our schedules are about the same, with one wake up early morning and nursing 2 to 3 times after we get home. Does the DC provider say she seems satisfied?

That's good to know since our LO's are so close in age! My DC provider at the moment is DH, and he says that while she does seem satisfied after a bottle she also wakes up starving when she takes a nap, and fusses while he heats up the next one. So far today she's already nursed and had two bottles, and it's only 11:00am! Might be a growth spurt, especially since she was up late last night wanting to nurse.

Is your DD at home with YH or at daycare? If at home, I'd try to stop after 4oz and see if she's satisfied. Keep that extra ounce for before the next feeding or if she gets hungry in between. If you're worried, you could spread the same amount of milk you're doing now over 4 bottles instead of 3. Are you able to keep up pumping what she's eating so far?

DS usually goes through 15 to 20 ounces when I'm gone 9 hours, in 3 to 4 bottles. It all depends on how well he ate before daycare, how active he is, if it's a growth spurt, whatever. But he's also a giant baby and super active, so I'm pretty confident he needs the calories. Good luck!

Thanks Sterling! Yes, she is with DH, and I've encouraged him to try 4 bottles of 4oz each today. So far it's going well! I have been keeping up with her with pumping, I can usually get 16oz to 20oz in a day. Hopefully that will continue. My supply is good as long as I constantly drink water and eat like a horse to keep my calories high. Glad you're doing well with all of this too!
