High-Risk Pregnancy

All I did was drink milk!

I'm on meds for GD. I've been pretty good about following the plan and since my body has gotten used to the meds my numbers have stayed fairly low.

I so badly just wanted some milk this morning so I had a bowl of cereal with milk for breakfast instead of the usual toast. My level was 220! The highest it has ever been. :( Is it just because I had milk for breakfast? Because I eat cheerios all of the time (without milk or with milk but later in the day).

I knew I wasn't supposed to drink milk at breakfast but I didn't expect it to be this bad. :( My fasting number was fine.

Re: All I did was drink milk!

  • it probably was the milk.  I was told to try milk with breakfast and if it works then great but for most people it doesn't.  I guess I'm lucky since I can have a cup of milk and still be under 120 two hours later.

  • I'm only on day 2 of this GD diet, but I had milk yesterday for breakfast (with a whole wheat english muffin and peanut butter) and my level was 131.  I'm supposed to be under 120.  Today I cut out the milk but had the muffin and peanut butter and my level was 94.  I guess we'll be cutting out milk in the morning!

  • Milk and cereal are pretty carby, so I expect you did not have enough protein to offset that combo.

  • You could try mootopia.  My nurse suggested it because it tastes like milk but has half the carbs (6 compared to 12 carbs in a cup).
  • My dr advised me that milk can make my levels go up so she advised me to saveit for lunch or after.

  • I was told in my class to avoid cereal and milk combo all together and to avoid milk/fruit in the morning.  Something to do with the combination of carbs/sugars that doesn't break down quickly.  If I want a glass of milk, I usually have it as my afternoon snack or with dinner.
  • Many women are more carb sensitive in the morning which is why things you can eat later in the day may not work for you in the AM. There was also not enough protein (unless you're doing Kashi protein cereal + almond milk, I don't think they combo will work).
