I saw your TTT about being vegan too. Remind me, are you carrying or is it your partner? I know very few people who are vegan and pregnant and I always get tons of questions if it comes up. How have things been for you and your family?

We also get a lot of questions about what the baby will eat. I usually respond breastmilk for the first six months and then we'll figure it out as we go.

  • I'm the one carrying.  I've been vegan for a little over two years, vegetarian for 10 years.  I was feeling so icky during the first trimester that I did eat some egg and cheese, but was still maintaining a vegan diet 95% of the time.  My normal appetite is back, as well as my desire to cook, so I'm back on the wagon.  I'm glad that our OB/midwife practice is completely supportive.  When we start looking for a pediatrician, that will be important too.

We don't have all the decisions completely made regarding our son.  I know for sure that I would like to raise him predominantly vegan, but I also don't want to make it impossible for him to go to birthday parties or other events that aren't vegan-friendly.  On the other hand, we are lucky in that we live in a very vegan friendly city.  Most of the day cares have veg options, though not necessarily vegan options, for snacks.  Then, as he gets older, I want to give him some autonomy to make decisions for himself.  So, we'll see.

I have found a couple of children's books on Amazon about veganism.  They are on my wish list.  I haven't quite figured out how to explain why one mommy doesn't eat animals (and the reasons why), but the other sometimes does and why "we" (really, just me) don't want him to eat animals either.  This definitely would be easier if we were both vegan!  At least I have a while before I have to figure that conversation out!

Have you found any good resources for raising a child on a vegan diet?

  • Oh, and I have had a couple of people try to be very clever and tell me that breast milk isn't vegan.  Sheesh.
