I had a second A/S today to get better shots of baby's heart, and they found out that the umbilical cord is attached at the edge, rather than the center, of the placenta. My doctor, who is always really relaxed, said I would be getting ultrasounds and non-stress tests throughout the third trimester to make sure the baby is ok and that around 36 weeks they would determine if the baby is better off outside the womb, i.e whether or not they should induce early labor. Once I got home, I consulted Dr. Google and found out that marginal placental cord insertion can affect the flow of nutrients to the baby, sometimes resulting in low birth weight and premature delivery. I also read something about the risk of the umbilical cord disconnecting from the placenta during delivery, though I'm not sure about the credibility of that source. Though my doctor didn't seem especially concerned, I can't help but freak out a little. Anyone else experienced this?
Re: marginal placental cord insertion
Step away from the keyboard! Haha. It's ok to be concerned, but try to just trust your doc. TP for you!
same diagnosis here. I got a chance to talk about it in detail at my appt monday. not going to say that i'm not still mildly freaked out, but her attitude did help me calm down. I'm getting another scan in 8 wks to check her growth, but no NSTs were mentioned. try not to stress or pay attention to DR.Google. my doc said that she's never dealt with a complication from a marginal insertion, and she's been practicing in Boston for 20+yrs.
