BFing and calorie counting

I have been using MFP since DD was born to count calories and have lost weight successfully. Now I feel like I am starting to plateau. Last week was no loss and I'm hoping it won't be like that again this week. I'm confused on how many calories to eat while BFing. What did you use to calculate your daily calorie allotment?

Re: BFing and calorie counting

  • I eat when I'm hungry... which is all the time! No calorie counting for me, at least until I'm done BF.

  • I did weight watchers; they have a great program for lactating mothers.

I use my fitness pal too to keep track of my calories.  I simply entered my current weight and what I want to lose.   I heard to add about 300 to 500 calories for breastfeeding.  I exclusively pump so I haven't noticed a dip in my supply since counting and really watching my calories.  I hear that it impacts some more than others.

  • I don't eat extra calories while BF, and my supply is not affected.a few yrs ago I lost a bunch of weight and never counted calories. Just eat healthy and everything in moderation.

  • I try to eat 1800-2000 calories a day while breastfeeding, and I am still losing about a pound a week or so. I am 3 months pp and have lost 40 lbs... The first 30 fell off, the last 10 have been gradual. I am at a healthy weight no (BMW = 23.4). I want to lose more but am happy for slow and steady.

like a pp said, I would add about 500 calories to what you would normally need since you are breastfeeding.
