Trouble TTC

RE Follow up and HSG

Hey girls! So, I'm back from my RE appointment and it seemed to go well. I have a follow-up at the beginning of August after we get some testing done.

They ordered blood work, which I got done today and the hubs will do an SA in the next couple weeks. You were right--they ordered an HSG. Boo, not looking forward to that.

I'm trying to find the right time in my cycle to do the HSG test, but get it done before my second appointment. I should have asked how long it takes to get the results, but do you think if I get the test done the day prior to the appointment that would be okay? I feel like that's my only option and I really want to get the results prior to our next appointment so we don't have to wait yet another month before talking to the RE and making plans!

Also, this is a dumb question, but the RE never mentioned where I get the HSG test done...I'm assuming most get it done right at the RE office? Perhaps each doctor is different and I should have asked. I'll probably give them a ring back.

Thanks for your encouragement.  The next couple months will definitely be telling for us, but at least we'll get answers.

Re: RE Follow up and HSG

  • My RE only does the HSG after your period ends but before ovulation. I was given instructions to call the office as soon as reached my next CD1 in order to schedule the test on an acceptable day. You should probably call your office and see if they have a similar procedure.

Some places, like mine, perform the HSG right in their office. Other doctors send you to a hospital. This is also something you'll have to ask your office.

Typically, the person who performs the HSG will be able to give you the results immediately after the test. Most people get to watch what's happening during the procedure too. Unless there is something unusual going on, your doctor won't need too much time to interpret the results.

I hope you get all of your answers soon! Good luck!

  • The HSG has to be done after your period but before ovulation.  I think I had mine done around CD 9.  They should have given you instructions to call on CD 1 to so it can be scheduled.

I got my results right away.  As soon as he finished the procedure, my doc let me know that my tubes were open and that my uterus looked normal.

i did my HSG with my OB/GYN and it was done at the hospital imaging center.  The HSG requires X-ray equipment, which my OB/GYN obviously didn't have in office.

Like everyone else said, I called the RE on CD1 and they set me up an appointment.  (I didn't really have any option of when to make it, they just gave me a day and time.)  It was done in a surgery center of my RE's building, so he did it.  They will probably give you all that information when you call to get it scheduled.  And since my RE did it, he went over my results right there.  (And for me, it really wasn't as bad as I expected.)   Good luck!!

I got my test results right away but it was my RE doing the test in his office/surgery center.  Like pp have said...totally depends on your RE's office so call and ask!

Also... I know it is a scary test but it is over in a heartbeat!  Mine wasn't painful at all ( similiar feeling to a Pap) but I was very nervous.  You will do fine!  It is a big test but so worth knowing what is going on!

    Good luck!!

  • Hey all! Thanks so much for your input. My RE is at the hospital so duh I think I'll be getting the procedure done there. I'm such a ditz sometimes! They didn't tell me to call on cycle day 1, so I'm glad you all told me. I probably would have called tomorrow and set it up!

Also glad to hear it wasn't too bad for some of you. My doc mentioned the test and asked if I was worried about it---I'm like "should I be!?"

I'm not happy about it but I'll be glad to get all of this testing and discovery done so we can move toward our goal. We have waited a long time and I'm just really ready at this point.

Best of luck to all of you on your journeys and thanks again! I'll update after the next appt in early Aug for shizzle!

  • Glad things are coming moving along for you. Everyone's already covered things for when and where the hsg should be done, but just another word of advice... mine didn't hurt at all, but I was glad to have taken some ibuprofen ahead of time to help with some mild cramping. Also, I brought along a pad for afterwards and definitely needed it. Good luck!

  • I had to schedule my HSG CD 6-12 as per RE. My RE does the HSG in office but since I have a shellfish allergy they told me to get it done at a hospital. It took a long time for the results to come to my RE from the radiology department at the hospital, more than two weeks.

THIS. And it's not that bad... I didn't have any pain whatsoever! Good luck!

Male infertility issues (husband had poor SA), combined with former cervical cancer and subsequent treatment which has resulted in scar tissue and modified cervix. MY INFERTILITY BLOG http://tocarryseeds.wordpress.com/
  • Mine was the same as the other PPers.  I had to go to a local hospital between CD 6 & CD12, however our hospital only does them on Tuesdays.  I also was told my results immediately and my RE told me to ask them for the disc so I can take it with me.  They had no problem with this and I was able to drop the disc off with my RE that afternoon so he would have results right away.  Good Luck!
    Ba hahahaha!
