Hi everyone!
I unfortunately get horrible migraines and have been taking Treximet (Imitrex with NSAID) for them. It works beautifully! However, my husband and I are trying to conceive (We will know within a week or so if we are successful ) and Treximet is contraindicated during pregnancy.
I have had a horrible headache on and off now for a week. I tried taking tylenol which was no help. I suffered for 2 days and called my OB. They told me it was okay to take Advil (Ibuprofen) during the first two trimesters- not the third. My OB called in a prescription for Fioricet. Has anyone taken this? I'm concerned because the pharmacist said it is not recommended however the OB said for serious migraines it is okay to take. I do not know if I am getting more headaches due to stress, hot weather, etc... or if it is due to hormones....
I would not wish headaches on anyone but if anyone suffers like I do- I would love any helpful advice!
Thanks everyone!
Re: Headaches and medication-fioricet?
I just saw my neurologist today, she said I was fine with imatrex as long as I took no more than one tablet per migraine. I've also got a narcotic as a rescue med. I did take an imatrex before I realised I was pg, the doc said it won't cause defects but could contribute to low birth weight if taken in excess. So yeah, I'll be reaching for the pain pill first.
Now my OB is fine with that, but she also told me that she had something that could be given intravenously in the office. I haven't needed to try that yet.
Thanks! I will mention these to the specialist to see if I can get more relief.
I had horrible migraines in the beginning of my pregnancy, and I have had a few again now that I am in the 3rd trimester. I have a prescription for fioricet. As long as you take it at the beginning of the migraine, it works great. If you wait too long to take it, it does not seem to be as effective. My Doctor said that it is totally safe to take, as long as you are not taking it all the time. They told me the only thing left after that to take would be a pain pill, and that the pain pill could be potentially harmful to the baby.
I would also recommend keeping a headache journal. It may help you to determine if your headaches are related to something you are eating, drinking, stress, clenching your teeth, or just good old hormones.
I hope they get better for you soon!
