C-sections

C section and older DD visiting

Hi,

In the event this baby doesn't flip head down before then, we will be going in on 7/23 for an ECV, and if that doesn't work, a scheduled C section.

Our DD is 2 1/2.  This hospital stay will be the longest I've ever been away from her. When did you feel up to having your older LO visit you in the hospital and meet the new baby?  This probably varies from person to person, but I thought I'd just get an idea of what others did.

TIA!

Re: C section and older DD visiting

  • I would say she can come a few hours after surgery as long as another adult stays with her and is in charge of her care. I had a parade through my hospital room the first day. I don't remember much of it, but I know it happened.

  • My boys were in the waiting room with my parents while I had my C/S and right after they got me in my room the boys came in with DH so they could meet LO before everyone else showed up.

I had my DD's visit the same day. After surgery our hospital has you in a recovery room for two hours, then they move you to your regular room. Usually the nurse would come in the room and give the first bath. We had them visit after that.

As long as you have another adult with her besides you and your SO she should be fine. Honestly my girls could really have cared less about their new sister. They wanted to see mom and dad. They only stayed for a short time.

This for me too. My LO was more excited to visit with all the other family than with me and the baby.

She also came up to the hospital each evening to visit and her little brother had a present for her each night - all the presents were a new quiet toy she could play with and keep occupied at the hospital. She got bored there quickly!

  • My first born was only 16 months old when I had my second c-section and he was in the waiting room while I had my second c-section. They both were with my family in the waiting room this past time too. I was able to go home after 48 hours, but my parents brught them twice a day while I was there.

  • DS1 visited me in the recovery room.  My parents came with him to help out.  After that, he came everyday until I was released.

  • When I had my second DD my first DD came to see me after I had been back to my room for awhile.  I had a spinal so I could not move my legs and feet for about two hours and I wanted to make sure I had some function back before she came to see me!  She climbed up into bed with me and held the baby and that's basically where she stayed every time she visited for the next four days.

  • I am having my RCS this coming Wed (YIKES)  and my Mom and 4 yr old DD are coming up after I am in my room.  I want and need a little time in recovery to start BF'ing and just enjoying him with DH for a bit. Once we are in my room, Mom and DD will be the first to come in and they are planning on staying a while that day. We have a surprise bag of stuff for DD to keep her occupied just in case she gets bored, I just don't know yet how she will react once he is here.

  • Thanks everyone!  Nice to see that they could come and see you so soon!  That makes me feel better.  Thank you!

  • I had my kids come around 8 PM or so after an 11:30 c-section. BUT...I would keep it loose and not promise anything. My c-section and recovery were amazingly easy and smooth, except that I was sick from the anesthesia for about 12 hours post-surgery. So, if we hadn't said that they could come meet the new baby, I might have waited until the next day. Luckily, the second anti-nausea meds they gave me helped a lot and that kicked in just before they showed up, and it worked out.

  •  I discussed this with my Dr. she recommends my son coming to see new baby the next day. She said by then I will not have so many cords (She said some toddlers cry or get scared when they see all that) and by then I will have had a shower and can be sitting up in a chair.. So that is what we are doing.
