Cloth Diapering

help with hard water and new washer

I never had a problem in our old city with our old washer, but my diapers have now developed a stink to them that I can only seem to get rid of with bleach.  I know how I am currently washing them isn't getting them clean enough, but I'm not sure what to try next.

I have BG 4.0s.  I usually do a rinse (my new washer doesn't let me choose a temperature), then a hot wash with detergent, a rinse and a spin.  They still smell when I pull them out.  I have tried washing with more detergent but that didn't solve the problem.  We have hard water here, but do have a water softener.  I have started dunking and swishing diapers before they go into the pail instead of using a diaper sprayer like I used to.  I can't think of any other changes, but boy this stink is different!

Any ideas on what else I can try to get them clean?

What detergent do you use and how much? If they stink out of the washer them they aren't getting clean.

  • I've always used All Free & Clear and haven't had a problem, but maybe that had to do with my old water and washer?  I know they aren't getting clean; I just can't figure out why.

  • TJ do you think it's my detergent?  What would you recommend?

  • You could also have stink because you have a detergent build up, actually. (Weird that the same problem can come from two totally opposite actions). Try washing clean diapers on hot water with no detergent, and see if you have any suds. If you do, you have build up and need to keep washing on hot until there are no suds at all. If you don't, you aren't getting your diapers clean enough.

If you can't choose the pre-rinse temp, try doing a short warm wash for your initial rinse, especially if LO has solid poop. Cold water does not rinse out solid poop well. We started having a little stink when LO started having solid poops, and that fixed the problem for us.

If your detergent isn't working, maybe try Tide original powder? I recently switched to tide once a week because RnG is just too expensive - I would use it all the time, but we have a FL and it takes like 3 extra rinses to get all the suds out. It works great.

I was also going to recommend tide. It's cheap to get a little and try it out, so that's what I would do.
