My DH, DS who is 20 months and I will be traveling from CA to Europe this Sat. Oh boy! At 21 weeks, I am sure to swell up like a ball lol! Any tried and tested tips for flighing pregnant and or with a toddler?
I will be taking lots of snacks for my son, hopefully I can get through security without them telling me to get rid of any of it!
Re: 11hr flight!
Good luck! Where at in Europe are you going? And you should be fine with all snacks especially with a child. They will most likely expidite you through security because of the child. My best advice (as we've done it a tone with our 20 month old) is coloring books, snacks, and naps. lol. That's about all LO does when we fly.
Good luck!
I have no tricks for traveling with children, but when I went to china 2 years ago (24 hrs of travel, including 1 16-hour flight) I found an external battery pack for my phone VERY useful.
Something like this: https://compare.ebay.com/like/360574579345?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar
Compression socks, getting up to move, and drinking LOTS of water are all good ideas. Maybe ear plugs or heavy headphones that will cancel out noise will help them sleep!
ETA: snacks are really easy to get on the plane as long as you're not brining anything to drink. You'll have to buy drinks past security.
TMI but after a 3 hr flight and 2 hr car drive the other day I had varicose veins "down there." Ugh. I started waddling. I highly recommend walking every hour! (This is my 3rd pregnancy so I think my body is protesting.) In happier news I ordered a v2 supporter from amazon and instantly liked it.
It's probably going to be my best friend the rest of the pregnancy.
I fly a lot with my kids but the youngest is 4 so you probably have more of a challenge. Snacks definitely help. I try to find something new to entertain them. This last time it was coloring a kidrobot figurine. A new toy, coloring book, book, is always a hit.
During my first pregnancy I flew to France while I was 6 months pregnant and I've also flown with DS recently.
For you: Try to elevate your feet as much as you can. I put a small pair of stretchy slippers in my carry-on to wear during the flight instead of my normal shoes. Walk the aisles. Drink plenty of water. My OB also suggested I take an aspirin a couple of days before the flight to help prevent blood clots, ask your doc about this. The flight attendants were very helpful and accommodating sinceI was visibly pregnant, they went out of their way to move me to my own row and gave me a ton of extra snacks and drinks.
For your DS:
-Load up a bunch of movies, TV shows & games that he has never seen before on your iPad/Kindle if you have one.
-Pack plenty of snacks.
-Buy a couple of new small books to keep in your carry on.
-Flash cards with different animals and everyday items on them were a big hit.
-We also did a "treasure hunt" with the Skymall magazine (find a dog, find something that is red, find a hat, etc).
-Someone recommended buying a small pack of post-it notes and he had fun pulling them off the pad and sticking them on different surfaces.
-Try to get a window seat for your DS, he'll like being able to watch the take-off and landing.
-Buy a travel pack of baby wipes and anti-bacterial wipes for your carry on.
-Oh and we gave him gummies to help with his ears for takeoff and landing.
So far I have purchased some compression socks for myself as well as a coloring book, new book and stickers for DS. Oh and one or two hot wheel cars :]
I will miss not having this board to read in my downtime but I assume with going to see family, they will keep us nice and busy!
Oh an We are traveling to Poland. We have both been before but this is a first for our son. Will post how our trip went upon our return!
FTM here and flying to Florida during week 24, just a 3 hour flight though. I haven't done any traveling research so I'm glad I stumbled on this!!
Happy Travels to all you ladies!
