I was diagnosed with GD yesterday. My doctor ordered that I attend an educational class with a dietician and diabetes nurse. I called my insurance company this morning to see what they cover for diabetes education and they cover NOTHING!! The class would be $485 out of pocket... Is this class really necessary or can I get the information I need about a diet from my doctor?
Re: GD Education Classes
I'm surprised your insurance won't cover it. It can be viewed as preventative care for both you and your baby, which saves them money in the long run. Maybe check your actual policy to see if what you were told is right? Also check with your OB about where to go given your situation. My office/hospital had someone I met with for an hour to discuss my case. The cost of that consult was billed to insurance as part of my prenatal care so I barely paid anything out of pocket.

I am shocked it isn't covered. I would double and triple check to be sure.
Call your diabetes educator and get the billing codes, then call your insurance and ask about those specific codes.
Is it an in-network vs. out of network thing? If so, see if you can find an in-network dietitian.
Also, see if your OB coding things with a diagnosis (GD) might change things. I would really research this.

Agree w/everything said here - the insurance company will need a Dx code/prescription for any services rendered (I work in the health field). Did your physician write s script for you to take the class? And if you were me, I would call the insurance company again and say specifically you were diagnosed with GD and per doctors orders you need to take this class. Sometimes all it takes (unfortunately) is calling back a second time, because honestly not all insurance operators know what the heck they're talking about.
If you're still not getting anywhere with your insurance I would highly suggest finding a dietician you can meet with one on one, either through the hospital or privately. I've been pretty health conscious the last few years, but it was still super helpful to talk to someone for an hour and reevaluate what I needed to do because your body's needs are so different during pregnancy. They also give you a calorie count to hit based on your pre-pregnancy weight/where you are now, and clarification on how many carbs I should be having was eye opening as I've never done a strict low-carb diet before.
Good luck!
Thanks Ladies,
I called my insurance company again and have been back a forth with them a few times today. They will not cover any diabetic education whether you have a script from a doctor, diagnosis code, etc. or not! This is just so frustrating. I feel like I am paying for NOTHING. Also, none of this counts towards my out of pocket maximum for the year either because it is not a covered service!! I called my doctor and told him the situation. I am going in to see him tomorrow so he can go over my options with me but it sounds like he is just going to tell me that I really need to go to the class and I am just going to have to fork out the money!! UGH!!! I HATE MY INSURANCE **end rant**
If you email me your email address I am happy to scan my entire Sweet Success, GD Educational packet and nutrition plan!
The class was basic information you can read about but the one on one with a nutritionist was really helpful.
Hope you get it all worked out. Let me know if you want the book emailed
